Cemirowl is gifted, and cursed. She sees the spirits of the dead, and sees the future in her basket of bones; her sight is cryptic, lacking, and mostly useless. In her tiny village, she is a priestess, but still an object of curiosity and an outcast.

A chance meeting brings one of the king’s caballiers to her door for a reading, for nothing more than some entertainment. He is well-entertained indeed by her predictions of his lady loves… and far less so when she foretells a coming death. He leaves, dismissing her. But for all that her power is mysterious and often confusing, it is never, ever wrong.

When Queen Tidyri is murdered, the caballiers return for Cemirowl. She is brought unwillingly into the palace and into a web of intrigue and lies, where King Larthor rages in his grief. He demands that Cemirowl now use her gifts to find the one who killed his beloved wife.

Cemirowl must draw on all her abilities – her powers, no matter how unreliable; her intuition for reading people; her knowledge; and her wits – to discover the murderer, lay the spirits of the dead to rest, and help the living to grieve and find peace. And, perhaps, she will finally find a place where she belongs.

THE BONE READER is a fantastical murder mystery set in the rich world of Ihyel, where the hard-won peace between two kingdoms rests on the shoulders of one determined, compassionate priestess.

From Darkness Comes Peace…

Raised in the caves of his father’s people–the brutal and warlike Oni–a half-breed boy knows only a world of darkness and pain. Life here offers one cruel lesson: fight or die.

But he dreams of a world of light and beauty, the world of his human mother, an Oni slave. His only solace, she implores him not to give in to the hate and evil of the Oni, to reject their Dark God, Grund. “Be at peace,” she advises, and from this, he gleans both hope and a name.

As his mother wished, Peace escapes the caves, but he encounters a world of humans that he doesn’t understand. A token from his mother earns him a place at the Sky Temple of Eos the Maker, where his mother trained in her youth. Here, he, too, can become a warrior for the Gods of Light. Struggling against his upbringing, he earns a home, a family.

But the Dark Gods have dark plans, and they have planted their seeds within the promising young disciples of the Sky Temples. To thwart them, Peace must return to the Oni, submit to the machinations of a centuries-old creature, and offer himself to Grund.

To save his world and those he loves, he must sacrifice his soul.

Teel James Glenn’s mystery horror mash-up Not Born of Woman is a fresh, approachable, and engaging take on what a sequel to Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 novel Frankenstein could be. Smart, self-educated, caring and mystified by humanity, the creature, now self-named as Adam Paradise, has spent several decades in Arctic isolation living on an ice-bound ship filled with an impressively stocked library and gold treasure, is back among alleged civilization, namely 1930’s New York City, attempting to understand humanity and his place in the world by using his size, power, sophisticated mind, and an impressively empathetic heart to help those in need. The result is an addictive read that mixes classic mystery, private eye, and horror tropes with a wealth of philosophical and literary references, a rich cast of fully formed New Yorkers that includes cops, gangsters, store owners, a trans neighbor, gypsies, and Nazis.

To create a quick read that builds on a classic, is fueled by essential thoughts, is paced like a thriller, and offers a way to love a long beloved character in a new way is an impressive accomplishment indeed. Teel James Glenn delivers all this as a page-turner of a ripping fun read.

Most highly recommended. -- Chris Ryan

[Link] 2025 Indie Author Survey Results

by Ricci Wolman

Every year, we ask indie authors about their experiences with writing, publishing, and marketing. We’ve been running this survey since 2016, and it’s one of my favorite projects of the year.

  • For 2025, we had 1,346 responses from authors around the world.
  • 96% of respondents are already published
  • 4% are not yet published but actively working toward it

The survey skews toward serious, prolific indie authors (that’s our audience!), and all data is self-reported, especially income. As always: Correlation ≠ causation. When we say “high earners tend to…,” we’re not saying “if you do this one thing, you’ll get rich.” We’re describing patterns, not guarantees.

This year’s survey covered everything from income and catalog size to email lists, direct sales, KU vs wide, and author sentiment.

Grab a coffee (or your favorite writing snack) and let’s dig in. ☕️

Table of Contents

1) How Are Authors Published in 2025?

2) Motivation & Goals

3) Income Breakdown: How Much Are Authors Earning Each Month?

4) Genres

5) Catalog Size

6) Formats

7) Revenue Channels & KU

8) Direct Sales

9) Cover Design

10) Editing

11) Marketing

12) Email Marketing

13) Sentiment & Community

1) How Are Authors Published in 2025?

The indie author community continues to thrive, with 77% of respondents identifying as self-published, while 17% described themselves as hybrid authors, Only 5% of authors remain fully in the traditionally published camp.

Indie publishing is no longer anyone’s “Plan B.” It’s a primary, intentional path that serious authors choose because it lets them:

  • Control rights, pricing, and packaging
  • Move faster than traditional cycles
  • Experiment with series, direct sales, and special editions

Movie Reviews for Writers: Snowed Under

There's something special -- at least to me -- about those screwball, over-the-top, situation-gone-from-bad-to-loony comedies of yesteryear. Snowed Under is no less effective than the classic greats.

Alan Tanner is a playwright with a rotten case of what we call writer's block. It's so bad that his play is set to begin practice in one week, but he still doesn't have a third act.

To that, let's add the screwball situations.

  1. He's seeing a new girl who won't leave him alone so he can write during his retreat to the country cottage.

  2. His producer sends his first ex-wife to help him finish the work like she did when they were married.

  3. His second ex-wife and her lawyer are arriving to either take his back alimony or, failing that, send him to jail until he does pay it.

  4. They're about to be snowed in together.

So, as you can predict, hijinks ensue. I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say it's not a good day for our hero, Alan Tanner.

One of my favorite parts is when Alan tries to explain writer's block to his housekeeper, Mrs. Canterbury.

MRS. CANTERBURY: I figured you’d be coming up again sooner or later. Nice to see somebody in the old place again.
ALAN: I thought, if I drove up here for even one night, I could crash through the wall . . .
MRS. CANTERBURY: . . . crash through the wall . . !
ALAN: Of my writer’s block. I just can’t seem to get any work done.
MRS. CANTERBURY: Mmph. If Luke used that excuse in the barn, the work’d just keep piling up, anyway!

I love this way of looking at writer's block. It's something that only creatives seem to run into. I've often heard that plumbers don't get plumbers' block. Electricians don't get electricians' block. Middle managers don't get middle managers' block. Nor do marketing consultants don't get marketing consultant's block. They either work through any "funks" or they lose paying business opportunities.

Free Holiday Story: It's Christmas, Baby, Please Come Home

It’s Christmas, Baby, Please Come Home
by Sean Taylor

This story originally appeared in Cyber Age Adventures Magazine and is collected in my short story collections Sin and Error Pining and Show Me A Hero by Taylorverse Books.

The woman across the table from me wasn’t really a woman at all. She had no real skin to speak of or any kind of humanity other than the feminine shape she had forced her new body of light and energy to look like. Her arms and legs may have been covered up with regular clothes like the rest of us wore, but the way I could see through the parts of her shiny, twinkling form that weren’t covered by clothing reminded me all over again how she was no longer human.

She was something else.

Just like my baby.

Her name was Nancy Elliot, but most of the world knew her as Starlight. A superhero. A woman who had lost her body years ago and had become a freak.

“We love our little girl, Ms. Starlight,” said my husband, Chris. “It’s not like we don’t want her.” He sat beside me,  his hands gripped together in one tight fist, his muscles as tense as his mind had to be. Putting words into the air for both of us. Trying not to make us sound like monsters. “It’s just that I don’t think anymore that staying with us is what’s best for Mackenzie. I think she needs parents who can understand her situation and deal with it better.”

“It takes one to know one, huh?” asked the Elliot’s attorney, a tall man with dark hair that had introduced himself as either Tom or Thomas or Tommy.

Nancy placed her hand on his shoulder. “I’m sure that’s not the way Mr. Brown meant it.” Her fake face looked calm and compassionate. Like a mother’s face. “I’m sure this can’t be easy for them either.”

Her husband sat beside her, wearing a dark blue suit with white pinstripes. He looked like a lawyer himself, but he kept quiet, saying everything he needed to by saying nothing at all.

“I only mean that Deidra and I aren’t really capable of taking care of someone like little Mackenzie. We’re just not physically or emotionally prepared to cope with the responsibilities of having a child that can burst into flame at a moment’s notice.”

“No parents are ever prepared for their children, Mr. Brown,” Nancy said.

Movie Reviews for Writers: The Norliss Tapes

I can't believe I only recently discovered this flick.

Considering just how big a Kolchak the Night Stalker fan I am, you'd think I would have seen it way earlier.

Oh well.

Coming into this movie, all I knew was that it was very similar to both the Kolchak movies and the series, and that it was produced by the same guy (Dan Curtis, also of Dark Shadows fame).

David Norliss is a writer working on a book debunking supernatural events. It's a book he pitched to his publisher. It's a book he has been paid a large advance for. Only, after almost a year, not a word is written.

Sanford: Hello, David. Been a while. How's the book coming?
Norliss: Sanford, I've gotta talk to you.
Sanford: I know, you're gonna tell me it's only half-written, and we're gonna have to delay our-
Norliss: Half-written, hell. I don't have a word on paper.
Sanford: It's been almost a year.
Norliss: I know how long it's been, Sanford. But I, uh... I can't write it. I'm afraid to write it. You're not making sense.
Sanford: We gave you a sizeable advance to write a book debunking the supernatural, which was your idea not ours. And now you tell me, a year later, you haven't even started it.

Now, before you chalk David's problem up to what is typically called Writer's Block, it's not that. It's much deeper. He's not distracted. He's not "blocked." He's terrified.

[Link] How To Write Like HP Lovecraft – 5 Best Tips

by Eugene Doak

Lovecraft might not be a household name like Stephen King, but his stories and the mythos behind them have a cult following. His unique style of cosmic horror has inspired countless authors, films, musicians, and games. So, even if you haven’t sat down and read The Call of Cthulhu, you’re probably familiar with some “Lovecraftian” inspired horror, which is the topic of today’s article – What is Lovecraftian Horror and how to write like HP Lovecraft.

Cosmicism: The Philosophy of Insignificance

At the heart of Lovecraft’s style is Cosmicism, the philosophical idea that human life is meaningless in the face of the vast, indifferent universe. His stories are not about good versus evil, but about frail, limited humans stumbling upon truths that their minds are simply not equipped to handle. The horror comes from the revelation that there are ancient, powerful, and utterly alien beings for whom humanity is less than an afterthought.

The Fear of the Unknown

Lovecraft rarely showed his monsters in full detail. Instead, he relied on suggestive prose and vague descriptions to build suspense. He would use words like “cyclopean,” “non-Euclidean,” and “squamous” to describe his creations, forcing the reader’s imagination to fill in the terrifying blanks. The horror isn’t just in the monster itself, but in the inability of the human mind to fully comprehend it.

Pastiche and Pseudobibliographia

Lovecraft created a shared literary universe by having his characters reference the same fictional grimoires and texts, most famously The Necronomicon. This technique, known as pseudobibliographia, made his stories feel more real and connected, as if they were all part of a larger, horrifying history. He also used a style of writing that mimicked 18th-century antiquarians, giving his prose a scholarly, archaic feel that lent credibility to the terrifying events he described.

How To Write Like HP Lovecraft

If you want to try writing like H.P. Lovecraft, you should focus on a few key elements that define his unique style. It’s less about imitating his exact word choice and more about capturing the atmosphere and philosophical core of his work.
