Cowls and Capes Looking for Submissions!

What We Want
Cowls and Capes wants well written, original superhero short fiction up to around 5000 words. There is no firm maximum word count, though pieces exceeding the 5000 words by too much are likely to be rejected.

Stories may be of any sub-genre, any style and any setting, as long as it is well told and well written.   Gritty, street-level heroes, mystery men of the golden age, gods-among-men, those with supernatural powers at their command, fighting Nazis in WWII or gangsters in the depression, Cowls and Capes wants it all.

Despite a focus on charity at Cowls and Capes, do not think that should limit what you can submit.  If it involves superheroes and is well written, send it in.

Cowls and Capes does not want any fan-fiction about any character owned by DC, Marvel or any other company/creator.  Stories must be your original work.

Reprints, Multiple and Simultaneous Submissions

Capes and Cowls does not accept simultaneous submissions. We do not accept multiple submissions; please wait until you have a response before submitting more work.

Reprints will be accepted if you have the rights.

Serial Works

Capes and Cowls will consider serial works, but please query first.

Content Standards

Graphic scenes and obscenity are acceptable if they are integral to the piece, within reason. Cowls and Capes has no interest in stories that are only gratuitous depictions of sex or gore. We may reject a story for any reason.

How To Submit

  • The story should be double-spaced, in a readable font, and as you originally formatted it, paragraphs indented, italicized words in italics, etc.  We prefer submissions be in the proper manuscript format, found here.
  • In your cover-letter, include your contact history, a short bio, two to three lines, as well as any credits or relevant websites you wish to plug.
  • Send the story as an attachment (.rtf, .doc or .docx) to CowlsandCapes AT gmail.com
  • Submission does not equal automatic acceptance.

Cowls and Capes will respond to your submission as soon as possible. If you have not heard back within 30 days, please feel free to inquiry about the status of your submission.

Editorial Caveat

Stories should be thoroughly proofread before submission. We do understand that minor mistakes will slip by and we will correct them before publication on the website. Minor grammatical changes may be made to the story; however, we will seek the author’s permission before publication.

Payment

For the time being, Cowls and Capes is a for-the-love project, paying in exposure only.

However, if your story is accepted, it will help bring visitors to Cowls and Capes and in turn bring more attention to the charities, people and organizations featured.

Rights

Cowls and Capes buys non-exclusive rights to publish your work on the website. The author retains all other rights and all responsibilities of the piece. This means you are free to have it published elsewhere at any other time and are responsible if the rights to the story are questioned or if there are accusations of plagiarism. Stories can be removed if the author wishes, by sending an email to the address above.

Keep in mind, if your work is first published by Cowls and Capes (or any other market), if you seek to submit it elsewhere later, most markets will consider it to be a reprint, therefore will not accept it or will pay a reduced fee.

If you have any questions, feel free to send them to the CowlsandCapes AT gmail.com
