Beta Readers are individuals who read, and review finished manuscripts before they are published, providing the author feedback from a readers’ point of view.
Beta readers can be friends or family, but a word of advice, some family members and friends may not take you or your book seriously and can therefore make you miss out on some very much needed editing. Not saying that to rain on your parade, just speaking from my own experience, and from what I have heard from other authors.
Your beta readers should be those that would take a serious, but casual, approach, pointing out their likes and dislikes, along with things writers can become blind too after so many revisions.
Beta readers are not meant to replace professional editors. Do not rely solely on a beta reader to get the job done as a professional editor, as they will not go as in-depth as a professional editor would.
You will typically work with more than one beta reader, but exactly how many is up to you, and will depend on the length of your manuscript as well as how much work you think needs to be done.
