FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JAMES PALMER’S OCCULT PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR HANGS SHINGLE AT PRO SE PRODUCTIONS
Known as an innovator in Genre Fiction, Pro Se Productions prides itself on searching out properties that belong in the publisher’s already stellar lineup of titles. Often those concepts come from writers already familiar to Pro Se and its readers. Author James Palmer’s Sam Eldritch appeared in an issue of Pro Se Presents, Pro Se’s now discontinued magazine, and left his mark on the fiction world. And now, Pro Se Productions announces an open call for submissions as Sam returns to Pro Se in Eldritch for Hire, a digest anthology.
“What makes Sam Eldritch stand out,” says Tommy Hancock, “is more about how James writes it and envisions the storytelling. Not only is Sam a master of the comeback, but the entire world in which he lives is set on high wit and sarcasm. The monsters are scary, the mysteries need to be solid, but even with that Sam is that unique character who doesn’t take himself too seriously, yet plays as hard boiled as well as he does humorous and supernatural. Eldritch will be right at home with Pro Se and we’re glad to have a character like Sam from a fantastically talented creator like James Palmer.
Sam Eldritch, Occult Investigator for Hire, is witty, offbeat period pulp about a different kind of gumshoe, a guy who trades insults with gangsters as easily as he faces down tentacled horrors from beyond space-time. Sam’s ultimate goal is to track down the demon that killed his partner and gave him second sight. He hopes that he’ll not only have his revenge but a few answers about himself. Sam Eldritch is Dashiell Hammett meets H.P. Lovecraft on the mean streets of New York City. Anything goes. Vampires. Ghosts. Cthulhu-inspired horrors.
“Sam Eldritch,” says Palmer, “is my favorite character I have created, and I'm excited about turning him over to other writers. Pro Se is a leader in the New Pulp field, and regularly publishes attractive books and e-books, so I am thrilled to have found a home for Sam with them.”
James Palmer is an author and editor who has written for Pro Se Productions, Airship 27, and White Rocket Books. James is also the man behind Mechanoid Press, a New Pulp Publisher. He edited (with Jim Beard) the giant monster anthology Monster Earth and its sequel as well as the weird western anthology Strange Trails. His work appears in Gideon Cain: Demon Hunter, Blackthorn: Thunder on Mars, and Mars McCoy: Space Ranger Vol. 2. as well as various issues of Pro Se Presents and a collection of his short stories, published by his own Mechanoid Press. He is also the author of Slow Djinn, a Sam Eldritch ebook. A recovering comic book addict, James lives in Northeast Georgia with his wife and daughter.
Stories for Eldritch for Hire must be 10,000 words in length. A query showing interest is necessary. At that point, reference material for this project will be sent to the writers interested. If those authors choose to submit, a proposal of 100-500 words must be submitted to submissions@prose-press.com. Authors not previously published by Pro Se Productions must submit a writing sample of at least two pages with their proposals. Authors whose proposals are accepted must submit the first four pages of their accepted stories as quickly as possible for review by Pro Se staff. Final deadline for completed stories is 90 days following acceptance of proposals.
Eldritch for Hire is scheduled for publication in 2015 by Pro Se Productions.
Any questions concerning this submissions call, please contact Morgan McKay, Pro Se’s Director of Corporate Operations at DirectorofCorporateOperations@prose-press.com. For more information on Pro Se, go to www.prose-press.com and like Pro Se on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ProSeProductions.

Taking Zombies Back to School!
On April 3 next month, I'll be on the campus of University of North Georgia (the Gainesville Campus), sharing my thoughts on writing Zombie Lit. Being the way-cool college it is, UNG offers a course called Zombie Literature, and as part of that course students have to create a zombie tale of some form (movie, short story, etc.). I'll also be doing a reading of one of my zombie short stories for the class.
I did this last year and had a blast, and the students really seemed to enjoy it too.
And until the day I can finally teach literature at the university level (yeah, right), this will certainly do for now.
Grrr. Brains.

Pro Se Presents Annouces Big Changes
Pro Se Productions, a leader in the New Pulp Movement, announces today a format change for its award winning magazine as well as a new head for the publication.
The latest issue of Pro Se Presents, the March 2013 #18 issue, will be the last monthly issue of the title. With #19, Pro Se Presents will become a quarterly magazine, but will also double to triple in size, according to Tommy Hancock.
Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se explains the reason for this. “Pro Se Presents has proven extremely popular and is considered by many to be an honest to goodness heir to the Pulp Magazines of old. Even with that in mind, though, certain things have to be taken into consideration. One of those is time and the rest of Pro Se’s ever growing schedule.”
“Due to a massive commitment to put out an amazing number of titles this year as well as the amount of time working on a single issue of the magazine consumes, some decisions had to be made. The result is that the magazine will now be quarterly, will contain at least twice the amount of stories, and have some other cosmetic differences that both allow the magazine to continue and for Pro Se staff as a whole to give more time to all the titles being prepared.”
The first quarterly issue of Pro Se Presents will be 19, available in June 2013.
“Other changes,” Hancock stated, “are coming for the magazine as well. Until now, I have included the duties of the magazine as one of my Editor-In-Chief responsibilities. And, as with everything else Pro Se, my time has become stretched thin enough that it’s become imperative to pass the duties of managing the magazine over to someone who’s been training for it for awhile as Chief Editor- Pro Se Presents' new managing editor, Lee Houston, Jr.”
Houston made his New Pulp debut as a contributor to Pro Se’s first line of magazines and moved up quickly to the ranks of novelist with his HUGH MONN and PROJECT ALPHA books, as well as various projects for Pro Se and other companies. Houston has acted initially as an editor and then Chief Editor for the magazine. "Each issue we showcase the best short stories available, just like the classic anthology pulps of yesteryear did." Hancock will maintain company control of the magazine, but for all practical purposes Lee Houston, Jr. as of Issue 19 will be the Managing Editor for the two time Pulp Ark award winning magazine from Pro Se Productions!

Art Imitates Death
And here's a teaser from my very first published zombie tale, a story called "Art Imitated Death" from Pro Se Presents #1.
Available vis Smashwords: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/116765
Available via Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Se-Presents-Productions/dp/1463787448/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_8
“NO REALLY. I’M FINE,” Mark said, putting the cell phone in the empty passenger seat. “You don’t have to come up. I’ll be perfectly fine.”
“I worry about you.” Melinda’s warmth was evident even over the lousy connection. “You’re all alone up there. It was one thing to be on the mountain when you and my sister…” Her voice fell away, then grew warm and strong again. “Well, when there were two of you… But now that you’re all by yourself, it’s got to be a little creepy.”
The road twisted ahead of him with only the lights from his BMW to help him follow the serpentine mess of roughly paved gravel paths. Like something from his past, growing up in southern Georgia, only with gravel instead of red clay. Drive for miles and see nothing but woods and fields, and then—boom—suddenly a bed and breakfast or a fishing lodge jumps out at you from around the next tight curve. Any minute now, his home away from home, his two-story art studio would do the same, where she would be waiting for him.
“I’m a sculptor, Melinda.” He grinned at the phone even though he knew she couldn’t see it. “I’m supposed to like solitude. Remember? Besides, I’ve got a new project to keep me occupied for several weeks.”
There was a long silence.
“Okay, but you call me at least once a week, and if you get lonely, just know that I can be up there in about an hour and a half. We could grab some dinner at that mom and pop seafood buffet.”
“Bill and Vera’s Seafood Shack.”
“That’s the one.”
“Yeah. That was one of your sister’s favorites.”
Melinda coughed and cleared her throat. “Well, we don’t have to eat there.”
“No,” he said, picking up the phone from the seat. “It’s fine, really. But not for a few weeks. I really want to finish this new project and then I’ll call you up for a weekend and show her off to you. I think you’re going to love it. It’s my most personal work so far. I’m really putting a lot of love into it.”
“Okay, if you’re sure.”
“I’m sure. Don’t worry about me.”
A deer ran in front of him and he hit the brakes, dropping the phone and sending it careening into the floor. “Hold on,” he shouted.
Melinda’s voice suddenly sounded like a fairy stuffed under a pillow. The phone had probably been jostled under the seat. He could hear her but couldn’t make sense of the muffled squeals and squawks.
“Just a minute,” he yelled, and spun the car to a stop.
He leaned over and dug under the seat until he found the phone and held it up to his ear. “Got it. Sorry about that.”
“What happened?”
“A deer.”
“You okay?”
He laughed. “After what we’ve been through the past year, you’re worried about a deer crossing in front of my car? Talk about a loss of perspective.”
He heard his sister-in-law laugh too. “But you are okay, right?”
“Yeah. Wasn’t even close.”
Something rustled loudly in the bushes a few feet away, and Mark jerked his head sideways to get a look. But it was too dark and the headlights were facing the wrong direction. “Damn,” he said and leaned over to open the dashboard pocket. Groping blindly, his fingers searched for the flashlight he kept there. When they didn’t find it, he remembered leaving it in the trunk after using it down at the cemetery when he had visited the gravesite a few days earlier.
“Mark?”
“Hang on. There’s something in the bushes.”
“One of them?”

The Writer Will Take Your Questions Now (#167) -- Why Zombies?
Aren't zombies played out? Why keep writing zombie stories?
| We're coming to get Barbara if you ever stop writing our stories. |
The long answer is this: Because I keep finding fun ways to play with the zombie story. Rather than rehash the zombie apocalypse that George Romero did so well, I keep looking for new kinds of stories to tell using a zombie setting. In Zombiesque, I used zombies to explore the nature of art and how love plays into that urge to create. In Pro Se Presents #1, I explored the wedding vow and how can a marriage continue to work in the wake of a zombie uprising. And in Zombies vs. Robots: This Means War, I explored love and marriage again, but in the context of love lost and the second chance that a zombie infestation might bring when one's humanity isn't what it used to be.
And because of that, all of those stories were a great deal of fun to write.
Besides, if I don't, they'll eat my braiiiiiiiiiiins.

Prose and Bullets with Tommy Hancock!
Perhaps better known as the stalwart publisher behind the big desk at Pro Se Productions, or even as the always-embattled promoter and organizer of the Pulp Ark convention, Tommy Hancock is a man of many talents... And among those, the scribing of hard-knuckled prose tales where good guys beat the crap out of bad guys and make the world safe for hard-working citizens everywhere.
Finding a few moments in his busy schedule, we encouraged him to take off his editor hat and put on his writing hat instead, then tell us a bit about what's going on in the world of Tommy Hancock at for the foreseeable future.
Tell us a bit about your latest work.
Well, latest work is hard to categorize. I have several things in the hands of publishers that are due to come out this year, but due to all the other things I’ve been doing in pulp, there’s not been a major amount of work from me published in the last few months.
I did debut a new character who was nominated for a Best New Character Award for the Pulp Ark Awards. December, 2012, my take on Santa Claus re-imagined through the lens of Doc Savage debuted in Pro Se Presents, a monthly magazine from Pro Se Productions. Nicholas Saint is Father Christmas meets The Man of Bronze, my homage to two of my favorite characters that really ought to be real.
YesterYear is probably the one work I’m most known for writing wise currently. My first novel, it’s sort of a fanboy mash up bringing the roots of pulp heroes into play with a story of modern super heroes. Great fun to write, even more fun to hear that people really like it.
What are the themes and subjects you tend to revisit in your work?
I’m an old fashioned good versus evil kind of guy. The struggle between the two, the similarities each have with one another, and the way both justice and wrongdoing have a way of manipulating those dedicated to them. I don’t mind my heroes with shades of gray and love my villains to have just enough likability about them for you to hate them even more, but my stories have clearly defined concepts of right and wrong. What isn’t always so clearly defined is what those involved do to make sure the concept they support wins.
What would be your dream project?
To have the chance to write even an 8,000 word short story featuring Robert B. Parker’s Spenser character (with Hawk at his side of course) and/or to write the Further Adventures of Rick Blaine.
If you have any former project to do over to make it better, which one would it be, and what would you do?
There’s a story I did for a volume entitled "Vampires Vs Werewolves" from Age of Adventure. The story entitled ‘A Balance, Bloody and Beastly” featured a pair of rather famous brothers, one a werewolf and the other a vampire, who essentially are at war with each other eternally and have certain rules that have to be met before either one wins. It was a fun story, but if I had it to do again, I’d have not done that short, but instead would have expanded it into at least a novella, if not a full length novel. There were so many layers to that story that I just didn’t have a chance to explore.
What inspires you to write?
Inspiration haunts me constantly, has since I was in the third grade. I mean, sometimes something sparks an idea, but as far as inspiration goes, it’s constant and continuous. It won’t leave me alone, this urge to write, which makes it all the more agonizing when I am also passionate about Pulp that all the other things I am doing keep me from writing.
What writers have influenced your style and technique?
Robert B. Parker. Dashiell Hammett. Raymond Chandler. Louis L’Amour. Stuart Kaminsky. Ellery Queen. Rex Stout.
Where would you rank writing on the "Is it an art or it is a science continuum?" Why?
This isn’t even a discussion for me. Writing is an addiction, an urge, a function absolutely necessary for life, an emotion, a beast struggling to get out and onto the paper so the world can see it free in all its bloody wonder.
Any other upcoming projects you would like to plug?
This is where the list gets long and hopefully if we do this again in a few months, a lot of these things will be the answer to that first question.
I have a story in the upcoming anthology from Reese Unlimited. I am honored to be one of the writers asked by Rook creator Barry Reese to contribute a tale to the anthology featuring his masked hero. This story also stars a classic Pulp Villain. Following that up, both the Rook and this villain will be the centerpiece of the trilogy of Rook volumes I’m writing, beginning with The Rook Volume 7 later this year.
I have a story set in a really cool universe that mixes super powers with the Jazz Age. SPEAK ME NOT is a PI tale with something extra that Bobby Nash and Sean Taylor plan to make use of. Also, Neil Burke has an anthology planned of crime fiction to which I contributed a story set in a universe I created sometime ago, a precinct known as The Ninth Circle where all lost souls go to die.
Also, Airship 27 has a collection coming out soon called TALES OF THE HANGING MONKEY. This South Seas themed collection features characters created by Billy Craig that all live on an island and hang out at, well, a bar called The Hanging Monkey. This story was basically a lot of fun and the first time in a while I’ve written what someone called ‘sweaty’ Pulp.
I’m working on several other awesome stories as well, including tales for Moonstone, for my own company (Pro Se Productions). And more.
These stories include some original characters, like my very own Doc Daye, a part of the Sovereign City Project, but I’m also getting to play with several established characters in the future as well, including Operator Five, Johnny Dollar, The Spider, and one really cool dream project (probably third on my dream list) that I can’t talk about just yet.

Nicholas Saint is Father Christmas meets The Man of Bronze, my homage to two of my favorite characters that really ought to be real.YesterYear is probably the one work I’m most known for writing wise currently. My first novel, it’s sort of a fanboy mash up bringing the roots of pulp heroes into play with a story of modern super heroes. Great fun to write, even more fun to hear that people really like it.
What are the themes and subjects you tend to revisit in your work?

Magazine Line Up for the first part of 2012 from Pro Se AND Two Notable New Pulp Publishers Collaborate!
Pro Se Productions, Publisher of the monthly New Pulp Magazine PRO SE PRESENTS, announced today its magazine lineup for the first quarter of 2012! This lineup includes not only works from multiple writers, both new and familiar to New Pulp fans, but also features the first collaboration between Pro Se and noted New Pulp Publisher, White Rocket Books!“Pro Se is ecstatic,” Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of and Partner in Pro Se Productions, stated today, “to be working with White Rocket Books and especially its owner and premier writer, Van Allen Plexico. Known as one of the leading New Pulp writers today and able to bridge nearly any genre, Van brings a special touch to anything he writes and creates. For Pro Se to be able to give Van a vehicle to showcase his latest upcoming work HAWK in a monthly magazine format is an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.”
HAWK: HAND OF THE MACHINE is a stand-alone piece including an excerpt from Plexico’s HAWK novel, to be published by White Rocket Books in 2012, reworked to be a story all its own. It spotlights the title character, a member of a force of protectors of space and its galaxies and planets. HAND OF THE MACHINE will be featured in two parts beginning in PRO SE PRESENTS #7, February 2012, and ending in PRO SE PRESENTS # 8, March 2012. HAWK will also be the cover feature for the March issue.
“I couldn't be happier,” said Van Allen Plexico, creator of HAWK and Publisher of White Rocket Books, “to see HAWK getting to make his mark for the first time in the pages of PRO SE PRESENTS, before he appears anywhere else. I think HAWK will appeal to readers of all sorts--from military SF fans to space opera aficionados to pure pulp action/adventure fans--and Pro Se has positioned itself to reach that kind of broad audience and bring them the best that New Pulp has to offer.Plexico continued, “The readers of PRO SE PRESENTS will discover a new character and a new universe to get into and enjoy, and my own readers will check out the magazine and find in it a publication that they will truly get a kick out of every month. My thanks go out to Tommy Hancock and his merry band of Pulpsters for giving HAWK this kind of spotlight to make his big debut!”
The tales that make up the rest of PRO SE PRESENTS for the January, February, and March issues only show how varied the New Pulp field and the content from Pro Se can be! Featuring stories from various genres by Kevin Rodgers, Megan Smith, PJ Lozito, James Palmer, Frank Schildiner, Ken Janssens, and Ashley Strole Mangin, the first three months of PRO SE PRESENTS is full of intergalactic adventure, Private Eyes of a feminine persuasion, dimension hopping teenagers, monster hunting gangsters, masked heroes, eerie Villains cast in classic molds, and so much more! Known for Puttin’ The Monthly Back into Pulp, PRO SE PRESENTS is headed up by Lee Houston, Jr., Magazine Editor in Chief and edited by Houston, Frank Schildiner, Nancy Hansen, and Don Thomas!

PRO SE GOES DIGITAL!
Pro Se Productions announces today that while still putting the monthly into pulp as it has since publishing its first work in August 2010, it now makes its extensive library available in E-book format! Leading off with veteran pulp Author Barry Reese's THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY, Pro Se plans to not only make its current catalog available in coming weeks and months via the Kindle, Nook, and in other digital formats, but it also intends to make its upcoming 2012 calendar available via ebook as well."Yes," Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Press reports, "This process has taken a while and there's a few reasons for that. We originally offered PDFs of our titles and those actually were quite successful, but the requests for Kindle, Nook, and more versions digitally have poured in since day one. Our biggest hold up was having the staff to produce quality e-books. We now have that in the person of Russ Anderson, a pulp author and a vital part of Pulpwork Press as well. Russ is already at work converting our current books into digital formats, hoping to complete at least one a week for the foreseeable future."
THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY, the first book entry into Pro Se's Sovereign City Project features a hero who awakens on the city's shores with no idea who he is. Taking the name Lazarus Gray, he forms a team of adventurers to battle the crime, corruption, and evil rampant in Sovereign City. And its now available for the Kindle at Amazon and in a variety of formats here at Smashwords! Hancock states that it will be available from Barnes and Noble for the Nook within the week!
Stay tuned for further announcements as Pro Se enters the digital age with E-Books-Pulp Style!
