New Submission Calls from Pro Se Press!

OPEN ANTHOLOGY CALL: A MYSTERIOUS KEEPER OF CREATURES OF IMAGINATION -- CALL OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS TO ‘MATAGORDIA’S MYTHICAL MENAGERIE’ ANTHOLOGY

Known for its unique anthologies, Pro Se Productions ups its game as a cutting edge genre fiction publisher with its latest submissions call. Based on a concept created by Pro Se’s Editor in Chief, Tommy Hancock, proposals are now being accepted for ‘MATAGORDIA’S MYTHICAL MENAGERIE VOLUME ONE.’

“Perhaps the greatest part of my job, ” says Hancock, “is getting to be a part of the creative process at Pro Se. To not only make sure great writers and artists work for the company, but to also build concepts that challenge creators and draw in readers is one of the major reasons I do what I do. MATAGORDIA’S MYTHICAL MENAGERIE is a concept I’ve toyed with for a while, looking for a way to combine aspects of my favorite concepts from different genres and stories. I think this is it and one that will definitely excite both readers and writers.”

The world is not simply a blue and brown ball called Earth. It is a wondrous mix of magic, mystery, and madness. And from this tangle of wonder and wild come beasts, beings, and monsters thought to be fantasy…or fears alone. Yet, the truth is that humans and the animals we know to exist are not alone, never have been. And those things, those living things that belong to legend and nightmare, to dream and story…they need a place to be as well. A way to live, many of them the last of their kind. And someone to take care of them.

“Matagordia,” explains Hancock, “is a person that has what some would call a circus, a freak show, a traveling extravaganza…it all sort of depends on which time period you’re talking about. Be it a circus tent in the middle of a Midwestern field in the 19th Century or a small auditorium that somehow suddenly appears in Chicago in the 1930s…or any other such thing…Matagordia’s Mythical Menagerie is a place where not only can regular folks see creatures they thought to be made up…but those very beasts aren’t on display as much as they live in a world all their own, one that is more than tent flaps or doors. Where outsiders see a warehouse actually may exist entire landscapes…and then there’s Matagordia him…or herself.”

Stories for this anthology must be set in between the years 1800 to the present day. Writers interested in submitting proposals must request the bible for the concept by emailing submissions@prose-press.com. Stories will focus either on Matagordia’s work/hunt/rescue of creatures considered mythical from multiple beliefs, stories, and cryptozology or on adventures that take place within Matagordia’s unique mobile world. A list of creatures will be available and listed in the concept bible. No submissions will be considered for this anthology without the writer having reviewed the bible.

Stories must be 8-10,000 words in length. A proposal of 100-500 words must be submitted to submissions@prose-press.com. Authors not previously published by Pro Se Productions must submit a writing sample of at least two pages with their proposals.

Final deadline for completed stories is 90 days following acceptance of proposals. Payment will be in the form of royalties, the percentage determined by number of accepted submissions. These are considered works for hire as the properties are based on concepts created by Tommy Hancock and Pro Se Productions.

MATAGORDIA’S MYTHICAL MENAGERIE is a part of the Pro Se Open, the company's anthology project, and is scheduled to be published in the 2019-2021 calendar years, depending on submissions and other factors.

OPEN ANTHOLOGY CALL REPOSTED: LIBRARIANS ON HORSEBACK IN THE WILDS OF APPALACHIA! SUBMISSIONS OPEN FOR NEW ANTHOLOGY -- ‘BOOKRIDERS’!

Oftentimes some of the best ideas for fiction come from fact. Pro Se Productions announces an anthology that has its roots in 1930s Kentucky, the WPA, and some of the most amazing women ever to carry a book. Submissions are now open for BOOKRIDERS, an anthology of fiction tales based on the Pack Horse Library initiative.

“The old concept,” says Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “about someone not being able to write a fiction story as good as the truth sometimes rings true more often than not. It definitely does where the Pack Horse Library initiative comes into play. Getting books out to the people who lived across eastern Kentucky in the 1930s was not only hard, but nearly impossible. In an attempt to employ women and to make sure books were accessible, the WPA started a program that actually, in its nine year history, employed 274 women as librarians riding horses or mules, literally spreading knowledge a book at a time to people that had no access otherwise. Who could make that up? And what better basis for a collection of great stories focused on fantastic women and the danger, adventure, and success they had to encounter on those backwoods trails? That is why BOOKRIDERS will be a collection, one we will dedicate to every single woman who rode hard with saddlebags loaded down with books. ”

Stories for BOOKRIDERS must be set in eastern Kentucky within the years of 1934 to 1943, the year the WPA ended. The central character of each story must be a woman employed by the Pack Horse initiative as a librarian. If writers find women who were actually a part of the program and they wish to base their stories on them, that is allowed. Fictional librarians are also appropriate as well. These stories must be true to the period, must contain some semblance of action or danger, adding to the pacing of the tale, and must be set firmly in reality and history. No supernatural, science fiction, or otherworldly elements allowed.

Although authors may submit their own creations as librarians, Pro Se will provide a bible on this concept, which will include five characters created by Pro Se that writers may also use. Writers interested in proposing for this anthology should request the bible.

Stories must be 5-8,000 words in length.

BOOKRIDERS is a part of the Pro Se Open, the company's anthology project, and is scheduled to be published in the 2019-2021 calendar years, depending on submissions and other factors.

SUBMISSIONS CALL OPEN FOR FOUR MONTHLY PRO SE SINGLE SHOT SIGNATURE SERIES!

In 2014, Pro Se Productions announced and launched The Pro Se Single Shot Signature Series, an innovative line of digital only fiction series, most of them episodic in nature and centering around a series regular or cast. Though the first incarnation of the line came to an end in 2016, Pro Se Productions announces the return of The Pro Se Single Shot Signature series by opening a submissions call for four new monthly series for release in 2018-2019.

Proposals for submissions are now being accepted for four new series as a part of the Pro Se Single Shot Signature line. Any genre is acceptable and word length must be 3 to 10 thousand words per month for a twelve month series. The series may either be episodic, ‘chapters’ in one continual story OR 12 individual stories featuring the same character or cast, like stand alone episodes. A mix of both can also be used, some stand alone episodes, some multi ‘chapter’ arcs.

Proposals for a series MUST outline 12 episodes/chapters/stories. This is non negotiable. Stories each month must be a MINIMUM of 3 thousand words and a MAXIMUM of 10,000 words and authors can determine themselves how long each story will be within these parameters. Once a proposal is accepted, a series will not debut until the first three installments are submitted to Pro Se Productions. Depending on sales, each series may be collected at the end of its digital run as a single novel/collection.

As previously stated, any genre is acceptable for submission. Preference will be given to stories that move quickly and keep a reader engaged. Authors with skill in writing serialized tales and/or recurring episodic work are encouraged to submit. Please do not propose serializing works that were originally completed as a novel. Newly written works aimed at being a 12 chapter/episode series are preferred.

This is a royalty only project, with the author of each accepted series receiving 50% royalties for the entire run of the series and, if collected, the resulting book/collection. If a writer submitting a proposal has not previously submitted to Pro Se before, proposals must include a four page writing sample.

All proposals must be sent to submissions@prose-press.com.

Examples of series from the Pro Se Signature Series’ first incarnation can be found at:

FROM APOCALYPTIC PROMPT TO ANTHOLOGY -- SUBMISSIONS OPEN FOR ‘BLIND MAN BLUFF’

Pro Se Productions, a home for imaginative concepts, announces an open call for a unique anthology where authors take a few written lines and allow the story to carry them wherever it may. BLIND MAN BLUFF is now open for submissions.

“Providing a prompt,” says Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is a standard way for writers to practice or get ideas, usually used in writing groups or online. BLIND MAN BLUFF is an anthology that adapts the prompt to give authors an opportunity to create a world based on just a few sentences, giving them the seed to see what they allow to grow with it. And the lines we provide are where each story starts. I am excited to see who takes a chance on this idea and what sort of tales get told.”

The prompt that each proposed story should use as its starting point is as follows-

"My name is Daniel Bluff. The year doesn’t matter. I am 34 years old, just shy of 35, but age is really just a useless number now, too. I stand six foot, three inches tall, weigh about 285, what most would consider athletic, maybe muscular. Short cropped black hair, peppered with some gray. Deep green eyes, like forest leaves Mariah once told me. I earned the scar that divides my left eyebrow in a fight I should have died in. I have skills most only ever see in movies or read in old paperbacks. How I learned what I know doesn’t matter anymore. Nothing from that life does. Not since the Occurrence. I may even be the last human being left alive or unchanged on the planet. So, I don’t write this for anyone to read. I write it so I remember the words, so I remember what I look like. I write it because I am alone and without much in the way of supplies. No one will be left to tell me what I don’t see.

I write it because… the world as I know it has ended and I am quickly going blind."

Stories must be 5,000-8,000 words in length and must be based on the above prompt. Authors can take the story in any direction they want as long as they are true to the prompt AND Bluff remains blind. Proposals should be 1-3 paragraphs and sent to submissions@prose-press.com. If an author submitting a proposal has never submitted to Pro Se before, a four page writing sample must be included.

This is a royalty only project, with the final royalties being determined by the number of accepted stories. Deadline will be 90 days after a proposal is accepted.

PATRIOTISM AND TWO FISTED PULP -- SUBMISSIONS OPEN FOR ‘RED, WHITE AND HERO!’ ANTHOLOGY

Pro Se Productions announces a submissions call for an anthology giving the Good Ol’ U S of A new heroes to stand for what’s right and good in America. Proposals are now being accepted for RED, WHITE AND HERO!

“It’s an interesting world,” says Tommy Hancock, Pro Se Productions Editor in Chief, “to be in today, especially in the United States. So much division and disagreement. Yet, even with that, there are basic concepts that people seem to rally around, the keynotes of what it means to be American I really hope resound strongly with enough people. RED, WHITE AND HERO is a book focused on original heroes created by the authors that embody the true American spirit. Sure, this ground has been plowed before by Captain America and countless others, but if you watch the news and feel the tumult in our country, who could argue that we don’t need a few more flag waving, freedom loving, Statue of liberty type heroes around? This anthology isn’t about elephants and donkeys and those who ride them, but it’s about America and a dream that I truly believe is still alive.”

The stories for this anthology must focus on a lead character considered a hero whose motif, powers, background, and/or abilities are based on/related to The United States of America. This character can be what would be considered a super hero with powers, or more of a street level Pulp type hero, but this anthology is for stories featuring masks, secret identities, and larger than life exploits.

Although stories like this can and should be used, if authors choose, to make political statements, no submissions will be accepted which attack ANY actual person or which contain thinly veiled replacements for actual people. Pro Se is seeking authors for this collection that can make their views known without attacking existing individuals.

Stories must be 5,000-8,000 words in length.

PRO SE SINGLE SHOT SIGNATURE SERIES SCALED BACK-SEVERAL SERIES MOVING TO BOOK FORMAT

In 2013, Pro Se Productions began a digital only line of stand alone short stories known as Pro Se Single Shots. In 2014, Pro Se announced a new imprint within the line, this one aimed at producing series that would have episodes/stories released on a schedule suitable to the author. Over 40 writers signed on initially and Pro Se’s intent was to focus on turning this program into a subscription service, offering this variety of titles.

Today, Pro Se Productions announces that due to a variety of issues, The Pro Se Single Shot Signature Series line will not continue on in its original form and will be massively scaled back.

“In all honesty,” says Pro Se Editor in Chief Tommy Hancock, “the responsibility for this change of plans in regards to the Single Shot series falls wholly on me, as does any fault for why the line did not reach the goals we originally set. It was an overly ambitious project that still might have reached its original goals had I not become ill, a condition that I dealt with for a large part of the last three years. I had built the Single Shot line to be one that I would handle exclusively and when I was unavailable, it left no one to keep it going.

“Even though,” Hancock continues, “I am healthy now, there were still issues with the concept as originally conceived. Finding a formatter who can essentially do thirty some odd titles monthly as well as building or finding a subscription plan we felt comfortable with has proven difficult. The biggest reason, though, is we have multiple series that simply have lingered on too long without new issues or have not started at all, and I just won’t have that any longer.”

The series that will continue as Pro Se Single Shot Signature Series are Chuck Miller’s Fabulous World of Zenith, Ian Watson’s limited series Byzantium, Tommy Hancock’s The Adventures of Doc Daye, and the as of yet to debut mini series, Tai of the Ebony Jungle by Philip Athans.

Series that will be ending with either their next or next two issues being released in March and April are Strikeforce Falcon by Richard C. White, Shadows Over America by Aaron Smith, Vengeance: The Cutter Series by James Hopwood, From the Pen of Adam L. Garcia, From the Pen of Greg Norgaard, From the Pen of J. Walt Layne, The Gatekeeper Chronicles by Terrence McCauley, and The Dark Gentleman by Barry Reese.

Friends of Fortune by Derrick Ferguson will not continue as a series. However, Ferguson will continue to produce Friends of Fortune stories as stand alone Single Shot releases in the future, released as they are completed by the author and edited.

Corpus Vile: Death In The City by Jim Beard will continue in some format with Pro Se in the future, either as a re-added series to the revamped Signature Series line or as a novel.

Bobby Nash’s From the Pen of series ended with the most recent story published, with Nash having plans for the characters from those stories in the future. Likewise, Percival Constantine’s Luther Cross series ended with the recent release of the latest episode, but Constantine plans to continue the adventures of Cross in 2017 via self publishing.

Series that will be coming out from Pro Se as novels and/or story collections are Brad Mengel’s Australis Incognito, Van Allen Plexico’s Alpha/Omega, Terry Alexander’s Empress Debbie and The Caves of Destruction, David White’s Magee, Nikki Nelson Hicks’ Jake Istenhyegi, the Accidental Detective, Teel James Glenn’s The Adventures of Dr. Shadows, H. David Blalock’s The Velvet Wasp, PJ Lozito’s The Revenant Detective, Frank Schildiner’s Johnny Rich, Gary Phillips’ as of yet to be released Nefra Adams, E. W. Farnsworth’s yet to be released The Secret Adventures of Agents Salamander and Crow, Sean Taylor's yet to be released Spy Candy, and Ralph Angelo Jr.'s yet to be released Tales of Torahg.

Some of the series that are to become books will have Single Shots released in the next two weeks under the Signature series line, as they are already prepared. These will serve as previews to the future volumes.

Any of the books announced that are in the possession of Pro Se Productions in first draft form by August 2017 will be released before year’s end.

Regardless of continuing as a series, as a book, or simply as Single Shots, the cover art originally designed for each title will be utilized.

“I can’t thank everyone involved enough,” says Hancock, “for the work done on this ambitious project. The Pro Se Single Shot Signature Series idea is not dead, just simply being rebooted in a way to make sure that when it can handle over forty authors again, it will be done right without fail.”

A healthy seventeen year old girl dying suddenly of heart failure late one night on that strip of pavement might just get added to the list of odd occurrences. Except for rumors of her being struck by a ghostly car…and the fact that Luther Cross needs a paying job. What Cross encounters, however, may be more than he’s prepared for as he walks the Haunted Road.

HAUNTED ROAD, the fourth digital single short story in Constantine's Luther Cross Pro Se Single Shot Signature Series.

Featuring a evocative cover and logo design by Jeffrey Hayes and formatting by Marzia Marina, LUTHER CROSS: HAUNTED ROAD is available now for only 99 cents at Amazon and for most digital formats via Smashwords at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/700123.

RETURN TO RAVENCROFT SPRINGS FOR ‘THE FEAST OF ‘69’

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RETURN TO RAVENCROFT SPRINGS FOR ‘THE FEAST OF ‘69’- NEW DIGITAL PRO SE SINGLE SHOT FROM AUTHOR LOGAN L. MASTERSON DEBUTS

From Logan L. Masterson, author of Ravencroft Springs, comes a tale of lost souls and dark discovery, set in Masterson's strange Appalachian locale, Pro Se Productions presents as a Pro Se Single Shot Masterson's Ravencroft Springs: The Feast of '69.

“Ravencroft Springs,” says Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is not only one of the best tales of chills and terror that Genre Fiction has seen in a while, it’s also a mythology all its own. Rich with secrets and stories untold, this world is one that leaves readers wanting more, desperate for the mysteries to unfold. Logan definitely delivers on that with The Feast of ’69. Similar, yet different from the digest novel, this tale of Ravencroft Springs handles horror in a different, yet satisfying way. We honestly can’t wait for more trips to this little damned burg with Mr. Masterson.”

No one believed the summer of love could last forever, not really. Hippies danced in the streets, slept in the parks, hit the road on a whim, but when two star-crossed lovers find themselves in the forgotten hill country town known as Ravencroft Springs, winter has come. What fate awaits the American folk band Feast of Love? Come on down the foggy, forgotten road and learn for yourself in Ravencroft Springs: The Feast of ‘69, a Pro Se Single Shot by Logan L. Masterson.

With a wonderfully atmospheric cover by the author and Julie Holt, Single Shot logo design by Jeff Hayes, and digital formatting by Russ Anderson, Ravencroft Springs: The Feast of ’69 is available for only 99 cents for the Kindle at Amazon and for most formats.

Not everything is a series and the From the Pen Of… imprint within our Pro Se Single Shot Signature line is designed for those stories by some of the best Genre Fiction Authors today.”

“Adam Lance Garcia,” continues Hancock, “is one of the most consistently great authors in New Pulp and Genre Fiction today. INNOVATIVE GENRE FICTION AND NEW PULP PUBLISHER ESTABLISHES AGGRESSIVE MISSION AND SCHEDULE FOR 2015 FORWARD

For Immediate Release

Pro Se Productions, a publishing house based in Batesville, Arkansas, announced today plans for future projects and a more streamlined focus in its overall mission.

Established in 2010, Pro Se Productions entered into publishing focusing on a style of fiction that would come to be known by many as ‘New Pulp’. Inspired by the usually fast paced, plot centric tales peopled with larger than life characters published in Pulp magazines of the early 20th Century, New Pulp as a style pays homage to classic Pulp, but also often brings a modern relevance as well as other aspects to new works. Although not the first publisher focusing on New Pulp, Pro Se quickly established itself as a leader in the niche market that existed for stories of this type.

Since its inception, Pro Se Productions has published over 150 individual titles, either in print, digitally, or both. Pro Se is known for publishing a variety of authors and artists, from previously unpublished creators to New York Times bestselling authors. The company has also established several different imprints, including author centered lines, an imprint focused on genre fiction for young readers, a nonfiction/academic imprint both studying New Pulp and offering facts and resource materials for fans and authors, and others. One of Pro Se’s newest and strongest innovations has been the development of the Pro Se Single Shot and Pro Se Single Shot Signature lines, providing digital only short fiction – stand alone stories as well as series, serialized novels, and author focused imprints – for 99 cents each.

As a New Pulp publisher, Pro Se has thrown a wide net regarding the stories it accepts and publishes, carrying representatives of multiple genres in its catalog. In doing this, Pro Se has become identified as a Publisher of Genre Fiction as well.

“Pro Se Productions,” says Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se, “is most definitely a publisher of New Pulp. The company is also considered a Genre Fiction publisher as well. The two terms aren’t mutually exclusive. The bottom line and Pro Se’s mission from here on out is really simple. We intend to publish quality Genre Fiction, the best of the best, and a fair share of what we publish will be action adventure oriented, regardless of genre, and will appeal to not only New Pulp fans hopefully, but classic Pulp fans, heroic fiction fans, and overall just fans in general.”

“Pro Se,” continues Hancock, “intends to take the type of works we publish, both past and future, not only to the audience we know exists for them, but to new fans, to markets most New Pulp or general Genre Fiction publishers have yet to tap. We’ll be focusing on genre specific markets for the books that fit in them, but we also intend to introduce fan bases that didn’t know they already enjoyed the sort of work that writers and artists who create for Pro Se produce. The diversity Pro Se already has in our library is a good platform from which to grow. And that won’t simply be done just because we want it to be. In the coming months, Pro Se will be experimenting with different ways of packaging current and future works as well as innovations in distribution and promotion. We’ve spent the last four years building a company that we are proud of. Now it’s time to show as much of the world as possible why they should be, as readers, a part of what Pro Se is doing.”

One major area of focus for Pro Se in the immediate future is the Pro Se Single Shot and Single Shot Signature lines. “The thing,” says Hancock, “about getting what a company publishes into the hands of as many fans as possible is that it has to be accessible and affordable. The Pro Se digital singles most definitely qualify in both ways and also feature some of the best writers in Genre Fiction today. We’ve also structured the lines in such a way that, within the next two months, we will be making several announcements related to various ways to access the Single Shots, potentially at even a better price than currently. Much like classic Pulp magazines of the past, the Pro Se Single Shot lines have the potential to be the gateway for new fans into Genre Fiction and perhaps the strongest arm of Pro Se in the future.”

Pro Se Productions is committing to an aggressive schedule in 2015 and beyond. Known for publishing up to four books or more a month in the last 18 months, Pro Se has no plans to slow down. The company is no longer taking unsolicited submissions until January 1, 2016. The purpose of this is to focus on the myriad of works already scheduled for 2015, a lineup that is impressive, to say the least.

“To list everything,” says Hancock, “would take pages and pages. We will be transparent in coming months, making multiple announcements about projects and events. Pro Se Productions is proud to say, though, that we will be bringing fans not only the best authors we already publish, but new names as well. Some they may recognize, such as John Lutz, Robert Randisi, and Richard Lee Byers, and others may be new to them, like Charlotte Knox, Raymond Masters, and Spencer Loeb. H. David Blalock will have a collection of short stories published by Pro Se Productions. Author Paul Bishop is developing a new series of crime fiction and Pro Se is proud to be the home for it. Van Allen Plexico will also have a much stronger and welcome presence with Pro Se in 2015 and beyond. New Pulp concepts, like Derrick Ferguson’s Dillon, will receive the academic treatment in our PulpStudies imprint.”

“Pro Se will also continue to bring the best of classic fiction back in new stories, something that we have been doing already in our Pulp Obscura imprint. Beginning in 2015, Pro Se will have a new imprint focused on bringing classic public domain characters back to life in new stories as well as continuing to do so through Pulp Obscura. Pro Se will also continue to work with companies like Heroic Publishing and creators like Barry Reese and Gary Phillips and publish licensed works for them as well as others to be announced later.”

“Most assuredly,” guarantees Hancock, “we will also continue to bring you the best authors in Genre Fiction, as we have been doing for four years. More work from Nancy Hansen, Logan L. Masterson, Kevin Rodgers, Lee Houston, Jr., and other Pro Se stalwarts is definitely on the way. Put simply, Pro Se Productions will continue to produce the best fiction in multiple genres from quality creators possible.”

For more information on this article or Pro Se in general, email Morgan McKay, Pro Se’s Director of Corporate Operations, at directorofcorporateoperations@prose-press.com.

HIGH FANTASY AND ACTION AND ADVENTURE DEBUT IN LATEST PRO SE SINGLE SHOT SIGNATURE SERIES LOGAN L. MASTERSON'S CANTICLE OF ORDRASS: THE WHEEL OF THE YEAR-SAMHAIN

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Known for bringing the best in Genre Fiction today to readers, Pro Se Productions announces the debut of a high fantasy series with a definitely Pulp like pacing as a part of its Pro Se Single Shot Signature line. Ravencroft Springs Author Logan L. Masterson introduces a unique innovative world of fantasy and magic with the release of Canticle of Ordrass: The Wheel of the Year-Samhain, the first chapter in Masterson’s epic series of interconnected short stories.

“Logan L. Masterson,” says Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is simply one of the best writers of Genre Fiction working today. Not only does he have a meticulous knowledge and caring for how to write, but his ability to walk the finest of lines as an author is amazing. Samhain is the doorway into a series that can only be referred to as ‘high fantasy’, complete with politics, religion, warring races, and more than enough to keep any Martin or Tolkien fan happy. Also, though, Logan writes in such a crisp, sharply paced voice that readers who enjoy the pulpiness of Howard and other such fantasy writers will more than get what they like out of this tale. That’s the line Masterson walks and he does it with a skill so very few have.”

When Davia Mollari, a young woman from a distant land, is called to an ancient temple, new vistas of friendship, hope and spirituality open before her, even as inquisitors from her homeland close in. Guided by priestesses of an ancient religion, defended by the Royal Rangers, and hand-in-hand with her two fellow postulants, Davia will face the demons of fear and loss. But as she rises to accept a purposeful new life, the servants of Kruss make plain just how far they're willing to go to put an end to her heretical bloodline.
Canticle of Ordrass: The Wheel of the Year-Samhain is the debut short story in Logan L. Masterson's Pro Se Single Shot Signature series from Pro Se Productions.

“Writing Samhain,” says Masterson, “and planning the rest of the Wheel of the Year Cycle has been a tremendous challenge, but rewarding beyond measure. The themes of the work have required some delicacy, and finding room for so many characters took a lot of precision. Then there's the balance of action/adventure fantasy with character-driven plot. I feel like it all comes together pretty well, and Samhain (pronounced 'Sowen') is definitely a project of which I can be proud.”

Canticle of Ordrass: The Wheel of the Year-Samhain features evocative cover art and logo design by Jeff Hayes and eBook formatting by Russ Anderson. The series’ debut short story is available for the Kindle via Amazon at http://tinyurl.com/leqwnjj and for most eBook formats at www.smashwords.com for only 99 cents.

Talking Byzantium with I.A. Watson

I.A. Watson's new eBook is releasing today. So we figured now was as good a time as any to talk to the prolific author about his new work (and some of his older stuff too).

So, your new series for Pro Se’s Single Shot Signatures e-books range is out about now. What’s the pitch for your BYZANTIUM series?

Image an alternative history where Christianity never happened. Where Rome fell because of the rise of sorcerer-kings and ancient wyrms. Where mediaeval Europe is a ruin of scattered fiefdoms separated by ghost-haunted forests and bandit-plagued roads. Where the ancient city of Byzantium is the last refuge of civilisation.

Our first five-volume arc, starting with BYZANTIUM: DEAD MEN’S ROAD, tells the story of a caravan wagon train making its way to the big city across that wilderness desolation. Unfortunately they discover themselves in the middle of a civil war, stalked by raiders and a growing undead army, with terrible enemies behind them and traitors within.

And in the best tradition of “beleaguered traveller” stories, almost everyone on the road has a secret.

What made you want to tell a story like that?

Tommy [Hancock, Pro Se Editor in Chief] pointed out that I’d never really developed signature characters of my own as many writers do. I’ve written half a million words or more of Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood, plus plenty of stories using other people’s pulp characters, either classics like Richard Knight and Armless O’Neil or new franchises like Blackthorn or Gideon Cain. I’ve never taken the time to develop an ongoing cast all of my own.

And Tommy, diabolic arch-salesman that he is, then suggested his new Single Shot imprint as being the ideal way to fix that.

I decided to look at a fantasy series because I’ve not published that much in the genre. I wanted the fun of imagining and building a world in an alternate history where some things were the same and some were very different from our own past. Dungeons and Dragons meets Wagon Train. Mystical medieval realpolitik interrupted by zombies. Thieves, warriors, princesses, and pagan priests facing a disaster movie. I wanted a disparate bunch of characters pushed together for an extended period of time so they could rub up to each other and secrets could come out.

Did you manage to get your new characters in there, then?

Our story starts as a swashbuckling interfering wanderer joins up with a long-distance caravan because he senses trouble – and fun. The train’s moving out across uncertain territory carrying an imperial army payroll. There’s a royal courier delivering urgent diplomatic messages. There’s a sleazy slaver dragging a bunch of captives to the Byzantium auction block. There’s a very large, very direct Viking security guard with a very large war-axe, and an eccentric humming trail-scout with a pet war-pig. Most significantly from our adventurer’s point of view,  there’s a dazzlingly beautiful lady mage of the Invisible College travelling alone on some mysterious errand pursued by terrible enemies.

You know how disaster movies establish a whole bunch of people of different kinds who then get pushed together when the crisis happens? That’s what I was going for here. The fun is seeing how they interact and who survives.

The main characters were designed to work at least two different ways. The challenge was to use archetypes of the genre – I could tell you the main cast’s Skyrim statistics and their approximate levels – and then make them proper rounded people suitable for a novel.

Is writing fantasy very different from historical adventure like your ROBIN HOOD trilogy, or from detective fiction like the SHERLOCK HOLMES: CONSULTING DETECTIVE books, or from high space opera SF like BLACKTHORN?

Each form has its own requirements but all have similar needs too. Every story has got to have a hook, compelling characters, an unfolding plot. They must all provide a satisfying reading experience. Of the examples you mention, the mystery stories are the ones that require the most unique approach. I plot those and structure them quite differently to the way I put together the adventure-based material. Sometimes there are diagrams.

I’ve done a bit of each kind of story recently. I’ve turned in my story for CONSULTING DETECTIVE volume 7, plus a different take on Holmes for a forthcoming anthology of Holmes stories without Watson for a different publisher. I’ve completed the most dense, complicated mystery I’ve ever written, “Murder at Barrowbrocks” for a forthcoming anthology of ‘cosy’ detective stories. Writing those is a bit like laying out a jigsaw puzzle. Nothing can be wasted in a fair-play mystery. Even the irrelevant is relevant as a way of obscuring the vital. Every story can be read twice for very different experiences, first time to solve the mystery, the second to see how the author slipped in the clues and to enjoy the characters struggling while we know the awful truth.

I’ve sent off the manuscript for the all-I.A. Watson anthology ROBIN HOOD: FORBIDDEN LEGEND. BLACKTHORN: SPIRES OF MARS is ready to go. Both of those required a sort of free-wheeling action vibe. The key elements were character, interacting with a distinctive environment, against a larger plot. A lot of heroic fiction depends on establishing a compelling narrative and threading the cast through it. There the writing starts with getting all the dominoes lined up, then knocking them down to thrill the reader.

Somewhere between the two extremes is a property like RICHARD KNIGHT: RACE WITH HELL, my forthcoming novella using Donald Keyhoe’s US agent airman detective. The blend there is between solving a mystery and surviving a peril. It’s James Bond with added whodunnit.

With BYZANTIUM, which is structured as stand-alone novellas within an initial five-volume story arc, the writing is most similar to Hood and Blackthorn. Adventure is adventure whether it’s in Sherwood Forest, dystopian future-Mars, or fantasy alternate-Europe. The other challenge was making sure that each book offered a stand-alone story with its own bang, so that folks go away satisfied (and hopefully come back again next time to be satisfied some more).

You intend to return to the Byzantium series, then?

As time allows, I probably will. We’ll see how the initial five novellas do as proof-of-concept. I enjoyed writing them, as evidenced by the fact that I started out expecting to produce a single novella, then proliferated to a trilogy, then ended up with five parts before I could reign myself in. And after all that we still only got the core cast to the city gates! Five volumes called Byzantium, and we’ve not even got inside the walls yet! More work is clearly indicated.

The five parts so far are: BYZANTIUM: DEAD MEN’S ROAD, BYZANTIUM: STONE AND FIRE, BYZANTIUM: REBEL’S RUN, BYZANTIUM: GHOST ARMIES, and BYZANTIUM: SHATTERED BONDS. It’s a bit early to say, but I think that might get followed by BYZANTIUM: FORTUNE’S FOOL.

Anything else on the writing desk?

My self-imposed task this summer is to get lots of finished things properly packaged and sent off to publication. Next up is SIR MUMPHREY WILTON AND THE LOST CITY OF MYSTERY, a World War II adventure in the Saturday-matinee tradition of Indiana Jones. A couple of other novels are in the queue after that when time allows.

Next time I sit down to do a long piece will be a full-length Sherlock Holmes novel that’s been commissioned. I need to get some of the clutter cleared so I can get a clear run at that.

Also due out sometime soon-ish is my first non-fiction book, the essay volume WHERE STORIES DWELL. I’m looking forward to that one, even though it did nearly kill the publisher.

I.A Watson’s publications are listed at http://www.chillwater.org.uk/writing/iawatsonhome.htm along with free stories and additional materials.
