Tell us a bit about your most recent work.
An Arcanist Problem in Reno: Book One of DRC Phoenix is a spinoff from the DRC Files, where Zach Graves joins the DRC team out of Phoenix to hunt down those who took everything from him. Like the DRC Files, it is a paranormal procedural and will be episodic, with each book dealing with a case.
What are the themes and subjects you tend to revisit in your work?
Characters overcoming flaws and obstacles.
What happened in your life that prompted you to become a writer?
I read a lot and connected with characters, so when I reached high school, I wanted to speak their voices.
What inspires you to write?
The characters in my head that I talk with.
Which of your works has meant the most to you?
It's always been the projects I'm working on presently.
If you have any former project to do over to make it better, which one would it be, and what would you do?
I've got nine trunk books that were set in an interesting world, I might go back there someday. What writers have influenced your style and technique?
Sanderson, Jordan, Hobb, Rothfuss, Bardugo
Where would you rank writing on the "Is it an art or it is a science continuum?" Why?
Technique relates to the science aspect as it derives from analysis, but it is nought without a creative seed.
What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
Having enough time. I'm presently editing a collaboration, judging for the FWA, producing nine or ten anthologies a year, have two books written of a fantasy series that I need to return to, working presently on DRC Phoenix, plotting DRC Files #7, mulling about a new contemporary fantasy series that I'll be working on next, and writing short stories between.
How do your writer friends help you become a better writer? Or do they not?
I have three groups, and they know me well enough to point out the little holes and the big opportunities.
What does literary success look like to you?
Having Sanderson finish one of my series after I die.
Any other upcoming projects you would like to plug?
Ar Inkd Pub we'll be looking for submissions for the Rebels anthology.
