A.G. Porter is an author of YA Paranormal Thrillers. She loves writing about diverse characters in the Deep South who are constantly at odds with the supernatural. When she isn't working on her next YA Paranormal book, she is pouring her heart into her poetry collection or writing her next sweeping Romance book under Amanda Guerrero-Porter. She lives in Alabama with her husband and three sons.
Tell us a bit about your most recent work.
I am set to release a Rock Star Romance in February of 2026. And while some people may say, "another one," there will be someone else who will say, "another one, yes!" Because the best thing about troupes is that someone is going to love them. The fun thing about this one is that my FMC is a Mexican American woman from the Deep South (Alabama) who has worked really hard to overcome past trauma to become the award-winning songwriter she is.
What are the themes and subjects you tend to revisit in your work?
I always put Mexican American or Native American characters in my work. Whether it's the FMC or the MMC, though, I do tend to write from the female perspective, considering that is how I identify. I do this because I am a mixed-Mexican American from Alabama, and I didn't see a lot of representation in media as a young reader. Even if some of my work is paranormal, the theme of racial identity is very heavily focused on in all of my books.
What happened in your life that prompted you to become a writer?
I don't know if anything "happened," but I will say I have had a lot of inspiration. My mom was always writing. She worked on short stories, and I would read them on her desk, and I wanted to do that, too. So, I did.
What inspires you to write?
Again, it started with my mom and the desire to share all of these ideas in my mind.
What of your works has meant the most to you?
My YA projects. The Sacrifice of Ava Black is my first book in The Witches of Thyana series. Ava is a character that I have always wanted to write because she isn't perfect, she loses her temper, she messes up, but at the end of the day, she stands for what she believes in.
If you have any former project to do over to make it better, which one would it be, and what would you do?
Oh, definitely! When I first started writing in 2012, I published my first YA series, The Darkness Trilogy. I love that trilogy, but it still needed so much work. After a few years, I pulled it, and I am currently reworking it to make it the series I believe it can be.
What writers have influenced your style and technique?
So many! I have always loved the paranormal. I remember reading The Third Eye by Lois Duncan in high school and knowing I wanted to write a story about a girl with supernatural gifts.
Where would you rank writing on the "Is it an art or is it a science continuum?" Why?
I guess I have never really thought about writing being anything other than art. Only because art is subjective. There may be a book, movie, or painting that I enjoy that no one else does. Though I can see it as a continuum as well, because it lives on, as we have seen for hundreds of years. Still, that writing or "art" is going to be either loved or hated.
What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
I do not plan. I do not outline. And that can get me in trouble from time to time. And, if I do plan something in advance, I tend to get into arguments with myself for not following the plan. Also, distraction. I am so easily distracted...squirrel! See.
How do your writer friends help you become a better writer? Or do they not?
Of course they do! I find so much inspiration and encouragement in other writers. I watch them succeed, and how much they bust their tails at marketing. I even have authors I reach out to for blurb help and reading through passages for me. Writer friendships are essential.
What does literary success look like to you?
Not burning out. I used to think sales were it. And believe me, we all want to sell. However, after doing this for a while, I have seen so many authors give up, lose love for writing, and I don't want to do that. So, if I can keep doing this until my fingers don't work anymore, that is good for me.
Any other upcoming projects you would like to plug?
Yes! Ruin Me a Rock Star Romance
Chase Duncan swore he’d never fall in love again.
Then Estrella Ortega walked into his studio and turned his world upside down.
Fresh off a brutal breakup and a soul-crushing tour, the rockstar heartthrob is barely holding it together. His label wants a hit. The press wants blood. And he just wants to disappear.
Enter Estrella, a curvy, no-bullshit, Grammy-winning songwriter with a sharp pen and sharper mouth. She’s not impressed by his fame. She’s not here to babysit his ego. She’s here to do one thing: write a damn good album.
But from the moment he hears her sing, Chase is hooked.
She’s everything he’s not: calm, collected, untouchable.
And the one thing he can’t have.
Estrella doesn’t date artists.
Especially not brooding, tattooed rockstars with addictive smiles and messy pasts. But the way he looks at her? Like she’s the only thing keeping him breathing? That’s harder to ignore.Their connection is electric. Their chemistry, combustible.
And the more time they spend behind closed doors, the harder it gets to draw the line between music and desire.
He falls first.
She tries not to fall at all.
But some songs are too hot to stay in the studio.
A sultry, slow-burning romance about forbidden attraction, healing through art, and what happens when the muse finally becomes the melody.
