THE MASTER MYSTIC RETURNS IN LATEST PULP OBSCURA VOLUME -- THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SEMI DUAL DEBUTS!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

An innovative Publisher of Genre Fiction known for reviving forgotten Pulp characters in new tales, Pro Se Productions announces the latest release from its Pulp Obscura imprint, in conjunction with Altus Press. Featuring a character of mystery and intrigue, The New Adventures of Semi Dual is now available in print and digital format.

“Semi Dual,” says Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is unlike any other occult investigator to follow him, primarily because he incorporates aspects of every type of mystic detective you could imagine. Aloof, mysterious, dangerous, adventurous, intelligent, and more, Semi Dual is the ultimate occult investigator. Also, his story as told originally was so involved and intricate, the character essentially demands new stories be written about him and Pulp Obscura is glad to oblige.”

Prepare to be amazed and astonished as the first occult detective of Pulp Fiction walks once more from the halls of the Urania Building and joins the fight against evil! Pulp Obscura, an imprint of Pro Se Productions, in conjunction with Altus Press proudly presents 'The New Adventures of Semi Dual'! Created by J. U. Giesy and J. B. Smith, Semi Dual was considered Pulp's first occult detective. Semi Dual, also known as Prince Abdul Omar of Persia, was an astrologer, a mystic, a telepath, and a psychologist. Semi Dual's name was based, in part, on his methods of investigation: "by dual solutions-- one material for material minds-- the other occult, for those who cared to sense a deeper something back of the philosophic lessons interwoven in the narrative." Assisted by his allies at Glace and Bryce, Private Investigators, Semi Dual peels away the layers of mystery to shine light on the darkness!

From out of the past comes new tales of The Master Mystic! The New Adventures of Semi Dual by I. A. Watson, Kevin Noel Olson, and James Palmer! Available from Pulp Obscura and Pro Se Productions!

Bound in a haunting cover by Mike Fyles with logo design and print formatting by Sean Ali, The New Adventures of Semi Dual is available now at Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Adventures-Semi-Dual/dp/1511433353/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1428110457&sr=8-2 and Pro Se’s own store at www.prose-press.com for 9.00.

The New Adventures of SeƱorita Scorpion from Pulp Obscura and Pro Se Productions!

A fearless Avenger for Justice atop a blazing steed!  The explosive blast of six-guns filling the air, punctuated by the sharp crack of a whip!  A mask protecting the identity of someone fighting for Right in the Old West!  All the elements to make a fantastic Pulp story came together decades ago in tales crafted by a prolific Pulp Writer.  Now PULP OBSCURA, an imprint of Pro Se Productions in conjunction with Altus Press, proudly presents three new tales of this groundbreaking character from Pulp’s Golden Era!

Pulp Obscura’s THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SENORITA SCORPION, featuring Les Savage, Jr.’s Masked Mistress of the Range is now available, adding another stellar star to the lineup of classic, but often forgotten or underrated heroes now living again in Pro Se’s exciting imprint!

Created by Savage in 1944 for Action Stories, Senorita Scorpion is in fact Elegra Douglas, a young lady who became a legendary outlaw defending her family's land and legacy, the fabled Lost Santiago Mine. Beautiful and deadly. A crack shot. A Fast thinking, daring fighter who is ruthless to those who threaten the land and people under her protection!

“Senorita Scorpion,” stated Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is a wonderful character on several levels with so much potential.  Masked heroes in the Wild West have a special place in the heart of fans of all sorts, from Pulps to old time radio to television and beyond.  Senorita Scorpion fits right into the category.  Then add in the fact that not only is this a female lead character created at a time when that wasn’t done very often, but that she was written to be as strong and capable as the very men she stood against.   Les Savage, Jr. gave Pulp fiction a heroine that is just as relevant now as she was in the 1940s and we’re definitely glad to be a part of continuing her adventures!”

Nancy A. Hansen sends Senorita Scorpion into action to the ringing of THE BELLS OF ST. FERDINAND!   Andrea Judy demonstrates that some jail breaks simply need A WOMAN’S TOUCH! And Brad Mengel posts a fantastic bounty with WANTED: SENORITA SCORPION!  Three great writers bring a classic Pulp character galloping back to life in three daring tales of hard riding action and bold adventure!

WRITERS ANNOUNCED FOR NEW PULP COLLECTIONS OF LESTER DENT CHARACTERS!

Twelve writers have been selected to bring two classic characters created by an iconic Pulp Author to life once more in two new anthologies from PULP OBSCURA!

Pro Se Productions, a premier New Pulp Publisher, announced in February plans to publish, with the permission of the Lester Dent estate, new tales featuring Dent creations Foster Fade (also known as the Crime Spectacularist) and Lynn Lash as a part of its PULP OBSCURA imprint.  PULP OBSCURA is a line that Pro Se, in conjunction with Altus Press, a leading Publisher of Pulp Reprints as well as the Publisher of The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage written by Will Murray, produces that features new stories based on rather largely unknown and forgotten heroes and villains from Pulp’s Golden Era.  Although many of these characters, such as Thunder Jim Wade, the adventure hero featured in the most recent PULP OBSCURA volume from Pro Se, are currently in the Public Domain, Pro Se PULP OBSCURA to include licensed characters, the first two of which were creations of the literary legend that many consider the best Pulp Author ever.

“It's truly amazing that Pro Se is a part of this,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, "and the credit for that goes to Matt Moring from Altus, Will Murray, and especially the Heirs of Norma Dent.  Pro Se is extremely proud to announce that the writers for both a Lynn Lash collection and a Foster Fade collection have been selected.

"I was both amazed," said Hancock, "but also not really surprised at the interest these two characters garnered when we asked for proposals.  The call we put out for these books garnered more interest and proposals than the entire PULP OBSCURA line we recruited for last year did (That project is made up of 34 different writers).  It was difficult and a challenge picking the best twelve, six for each book, but we feel like we have the stories and writers that will definitely both pay homage to the Pulp genius of Lester Dent and reintroduce these great characters to a modern audience.”

According to Hancock, the writers for THE NEW ADVENTURES OF LYNN LASH are-
CHUCK MILLER
RP STEEVES
TEEL JAMES GLENN
ANDREW SALMON
JIM BEARD
TIM LASIUTA

The Writers bringing the Crime Spectacularist into the 21st Century in THE NEW ADVENTURES OF FOSTER FADE include-
DERRICK FERGUSON
BARRY REESE
H. DAVID BLALOCK
DAVID WHITE
AUBREY STEPHENS
ADAM GARCIA

Both books are slated for a late summer/early fall release and will be released in conjunction with a volume collecting the complete original stories of both characters from Altus Press.

“This,” Hancock stated, “is the reason that PULP OBSCURA exists.  To not only shine light on characters that have been completely forgotten and now live in the Public Domain, but also to serve as a way for Pulp characters created by well known authors to come out of the shadows of more successful creations, such as Doc Savage, and to stand on their own, to chart new ground in fiction in the 21st Century.   These two characters were crafted by Lester Dent himself and are being used with the permission of the heirs of Norma Dent.  For this to be the first foray into licensed properties for the PULP OBSCURA imprint is truly an honor.  And don’t think this is all you’ll hear about it before the books come out! There'll be more about these two awesome collections soon!”

PULP OBSCURA ADDS TWO CLASSIC CHARACTERS FROM PULP'S GREATEST CREATOR!

Pro Se Productions, an up-and-coming Publisher in the New Pulp field and known for original characters, announces today an exciting addition to its first foray into classic Pulp characters, the PULP OBSCURA line.

As previously announced, Pro Se Productions in conjunction with Altus Press, the premier producer of pulp reprints as well as the Publisher of The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage written by Will Murray, will be producing collections of New Pulp tales based on characters that Altus is reprinting. These characters will not necessarily be the better-known pulp characters, but rather largely unknown and forgotten heroes and villains from pulp’s golden era. Although many of these characters, such as Richard Knight, the aviator hero featured in the first PULP OBSCURA volume from Pro Se, are currently in the public domain, Pro Se reveals today that not only will there be volumes of PULP OBSCURA involving characters requiring permission and licensing to use, but the two characters currently in question were created by possibly the best known and respected classic pulp author ever.

“Pro Se is absolutely proud,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor-in-Chief of Pro Se Productions stated, “to be able to say that with the sanction of the representative of the heirs of Norma Dent, PULP OBSCURA will include collections featuring brand new tales written by modern writers of two heroes created and originally written by Lester Dent.”

Later in 2012, Altus Press has plans to reprint the original stories written by Lester Dent of two of his characters, both falling into the ‘gadget detective’ category, a particular niche that Dent often wrote in and one that definitely carried over into his Doc Savage stories. These two characters, Foster Fade, the Crime Spectacularist and Lynn Lash will appear in Altus reprint editions and will also appear in anthologies of New Pulp tales featuring the characters as companion volumes to the Altus reprints.

“I can’t really express,” Hancock said, “how absolutely cool it is to be able to be a part of bringing two classic Dent characters back to life in a sense. Although some pulp fans, particularly Dent devotees, are aware of Fade and Lash, they are largely unknown characters to many readers today. To be able to not only have their original adventures in print again with Altus Press, but to also be producing and creating brand new stories to continue where Mr. Dent left off and to bring awareness to not just these characters, but to the wonderful variety of characters that still live from the Pulp Age as well as the lesser known work of Dent himself, its simply astounding for me to even be associated with it.”

Although definite dates for publishing have not been established, Hancock stated that recruiting the writers for the first two anthologies, one featuring each character, would begin immediately and would follow the same standard applied to previous PULP OBSCURA titles. Anyone interested in having the opportunity to propose a tale for either THE NEW ADVENTURES OF FOSTER FADE, THE CRIME SPECTACULARIST VOLUME ONE or THE NEW ADVENTURES OF LYNN LASH VOLUME ONE simply needs to email Hancock at proseproductions@earthlink.net. Those interested will then, according to Hancock, be given an opportunity to make proposals in the coming days.

“Thanks,” Hancock stated, “to Matt Moring from Altus Press for coming to Pro Se and wanting to bring new life to all these classic characters that have sat dormant far too long. And much appreciation to Will Murray and the Dent heirs for allowing Pro Se and the writers we’ll gather to be a part of something the man many of us consider the best Pulp creator ever started.”

FIRST VOLUME FROM PULP OBSCURA DEBUTS -- THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT!

FIRST VOLUME FROM PULP OBSCURA DEBUTS -- THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT!

Pro Se Productions, a leading Publisher in the New Pulp Movement, announces today the release of the first collection from its PULP OBSCURA line.  Pro Se, in conjunction with Altus Press, noted Publisher of Pulp reprints as well as the home of Will Murray’s new Doc Savage novels, developed the PULP OBSCURA line to spotlight characters from the classic days of Pulp Fiction that are considered unknown or rare in the modern era.

“This concept,” stated Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se, “is really the brainchild of Altus Press’ founder and publisher, Matt Moring.  He saw the potential in many of the characters he plans to reprint the original adventures of via Altus Press to be used in new stories by modern day writers.  The characters he and I discussed are in the Public Domain and therefore free writers to tackle and publishers to print.  Out of that rose PULP OBSCURA, a name I’d come up with a year or so ago out of my own thoughts of one day focusing on rare characters that most people, even the hardcore Pulp fans, don’t know exist.”

The first PULP OBSCURA volume is THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT.   The title character originally appeared in FLYING ACES Magazine in the 1930s and was written by Donald E. Keyhoe, an author known later in his career for his writing on UFOs.   Appearing in numerous tales into the 1940s, Knight was considered a flying detective type, an agent of the government who used the cover of millionaire flyboy to investigate plots, usually those involving things such as lost valleys or other oddities, against America.

As stated on the book itself:
From the past flies new tales of one of Pulp’s forgotten heroes!  Pro Se Productions in conjunction with Altus Press presents the first volume in its PULP OBSCURA line!  Bringing adventures and heroes lost in yesterday blazing to life in new pulp tales today!  Six high flying, wild and weird adventures from I.A. Watson, Barry Reese, Frank Schildiner, Joshua Reynolds, Terry Alexander, and Adam Lance Garcia!

Come fly with this hero of the airways as he battles threats to America from the common to the extraordinary! The first new stories since 1942!

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT is available now from Pro Se Press as a Kick Off Special for PULP OBSCURA.  Altus Press’ volume which this New Pulp book is a companion to, THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT, VOLUME ONE, will be out within days.  In the future, Hancock explained, Altus’ reprint volume and Pro Se’s New Pulp companion volume will be released on the same day.  “We did this,” Hancock said, “as a special gift to those who have been following the development of PULP OBSCURA and readers eager to see what we’re doing.  There’s been a lot of buzz about this project, which we all greatly appreciate, and we wanted to reward that.”

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT features a spectacular cover by Mike Fyles and the cover design work of Sean Ali.  Interior Format and Design is the work of Matt Moring and the ebook design is by Russ Anderson.  THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT is now available via Pro Se’s Createspace store at https://www.createspace.com/3783368 and will be available via Amazon in print within the week, $12.00 in print.  It is also available for $2.99 for the Kindle on Amazon and in various formats at www.smashwords.com and coming soon to Barnes & Noble for the Nook.

This first release from PULP OBSCURA is featured in the following trailer:

PULP OBSCURA ANNOUNCES WRITERS AND FIRST QUARTER PUBLISHING SCHEDULE!

Pro Se Productions, a leading Publisher in the New Pulp Movement, and Altus Press, the foremost publisher of quality pulp reprints and new works such as THE WILD ADVENTURES OF DOC SAVAGE, announced a partnership in November, and revealed today specifics to what has become known as the PULP OBSCURA Imprint.

The concept behind Pulp Obscura is that Altus Press and Pro Se Press will work in conjunction to produce related products.   When Altus Press publishes specially selected titles featuring rare and largely forgotten Pulp characters’ original stories, Pro Se will bring together the best writers of New Pulp today and simultaneously release a collection of newly written tales starring the same character. This stunning partnership will showcase both the classic adventures of some of pulp's lost treasures while simultaneously allowing New Pulp's finest to bring those characters back to life.

“This,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor-in-Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is no easy task.  First to provide New Pulp stories, brand new exciting adventures of rare classic Pulp Characters and to coordinate that with Altus Press.  But then finding the right creators, the authors who can breathe new life into these concepts and on top of that, deciding and planning which books will come out in the coming year.  It’s a heck of a task and one that has been rewarding on so many levels.”

Thirteen books in the Pulp Obscura line from Pro Se have been planned.   At least eight of these will be timed to release simultaneously with the reprinted adventures of the same characters as produced by Altus Press.  Five more will be published by Pro Se that will feature characters Altus Press has already published the available adventures of in the past.

“We are extremely proud,” Hancock stated, “to be able to announce a fantastic line up of writers for Pulp Obscura.  Some of the creators involved are well known figures in the pulp community, others are prestigious in other genres and literary fields, and there’s even a blossoming new author or two thrown in the mix.  It shows a project has great promise when you as a publisher simply put a call out for authors who might be interested in participating and you get not only a flood of interest, but also writers who stay on through the selection process of what will be written and who will write it.   Pulp Obscura could not have a better line up of creators for both their skill and their commitment.”

"It's going to be great to see this new material. Interest in the series has been huge and the enthusiasm by the writers will certainly result in plenty of enjoyable reads," added Matt Moring, publisher of Altus Press. "I cannot recall such a publishing plan ever in the history of the pulp community."

The writers involved in the Pulp Obscura line in 2012 are:

Howard Hopkins
Allan Gilbreath
Barry Reese
Derrick Ferguson

Pulp Oscura reveals its logo

And ain't she a beaut! This will be the logo adorning the Pulp Obscura books I keep mentioning here.

Stay tuned for more info. I hear there's a major Pulp Obscura announcement coming tomorrow.

Thursday, December 1, 2011

It's official. I'm signed on to contribute to two Pulp Obscura books!

I can't reveal which ones yet, but suffice it to say, they are the two I was really hoping to be a part of. So I'm thrilled.

I'll reveal more details as I'm cleared to do so by the publisher.

Here's the original press release about the line:

Two Pulp Publishers join forces to bring Fans more and more of the stories they love! Altus Press, the foremost publisher in quality Pulp reprints as well as the Publisher of THE WILD ADVENTURES OF DOC SAVAGE and Pro Se Productions, one of the leading companies in the New Pulp Movement announce today a cooperative effort and imprint to provide even more Pulp Fiction, both classic and New, to diehard fans of Pulp or simply exciting adventure fiction!

Beginning in February, Altus Press and Pro Se Productions will work in conjunction to produce related products.

“For a long time, I thought there was a good opportunity to simultaneously release classic pulp reprints and a companion volume of new stories featuring that same character. These are solid, well-rounded characters who have tons of untapped potential. I'm glad to see there are plans afoot to take advantage of this and utilize two companies' joint promotions towards a common complimentary product,” notes Altus Press' Publisher Matt Moring.

This is,” said Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “an honor and privilege for both me personally and Pro Se. Working with Matt and Altus Press to provide complimentary material to the great work he is already doing is simply a good move forward for Pro Se. And I am such a fan of the obscure, lesser known, even totally forgotten characters of Pulp that this project is already one of my favorites and it’s just a few days old.”

Beginning with the first cooperative publication in February, Pro Se will initiate a new imprint. PULP OBSCURA will be the title of the line and will feature a logo and other graphics highlighting the relationship between Pro Se and Altus Press. Both companies will provide various forms of cross promotion as well for the complimentary releases.

“Pro Se,” Hancock commented, “has largely stayed out of the Public Domain market as far as New Pulp goes because many publishers are doing the better known characters and doing them well. We’ve been looking for something different, something that makes Pro Se distinctive in this field. PULP OBSCURA, shining the talent of writers and creators on the little or completely unknown heroes and villains of Classic Pulp, makes that distinction.”

Pro Se Press will publish a New Pulp collection each time Altus Press produces a new reprint collection that both companies consider appropriate for the PULP OBSCURA treatment. Pro Se, with the encouragement of Altus Press, will also be exploring Altus Press’ catalog and be publishing New Pulp collections of previously published reprints that will have no future volumes.

The first PULP OBSCURA related project will be THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT VOLUME ONE written by Donald E. Keyhoe to be released from Altus Press in February. Best known for writing the adventures of Philip Strange, UFO legend Donald E. Keyhoe also wrote another long-running aerial hero for the pages of FLYING ACES: Richard Knight. This collection will include the first four stories from this series, tales that mix in elements of lost races, dinosaurs and more!

Also in February, Pro Se will simultaneously release THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT VOLUME ONE as the debut title in its Pulp Obscura line. Based on the stories included in Altus Press’ volume, six writers will write Knight as he wings into all new dangers, startling mysteries, and discoveries that may very well change the world!

The writers featured in this first collection are Terry Alexander, Barry Reese, Adam L. Garcia, Ian Watson, Frank Schildiner, and Joshua Reynolds.

Other PULP OBSCURA collections are currently in the works and any writers or artists interested in being a part of these projects can email Hancock at proseproductions@earthlink.net for submission details. Both Moring and Hancock cite a massive list of works coming in the near future starring Classic Pulp Characters in both Reprints and New Pulp Collections. “I'm excited to see just how new Authors take to these characters and what they come up with. There are so many forgotten characters that the possibilities are endless,” Moring comments.

Sean Taylor joins Pulp Obscura

I will be writing for the upcoming Pulp Obscura line of tie-in books co-produced by Altus Press and Pro Se Productions. No official announcement has been as to which characters or books I'll be working on. Stay tuned to here and to www.taylorverse.com for more details as they become available.
