Submission Opportunities from Pro Se!

PRO SE’S ‘PULP OBSCURA’ IMPRINT TO BE EXPANDED -- SHARED UNIVERSE TO BE ESTABLISHED!

In 2012, Pro Se Productions announced a new imprint focused on bringing obscure Public Domain pulp magazine characters back to readers in new stories. Originally done as a cross promotion with Altus Press, PULP OBSCURA has been responsible for the return of characters from Richard Knight and the Whirlwind to Semi-Dual and Thunder Jim Wade and more. Pro Se Productions announces plans today to expand the scope of PULP OBSCURA and firmly establish it as a broad, wide reaching fictional shared universe.

“PULP OBSCURA,” says Tommy Hancock, Pro Se’s Editor in Chief, “has been a wonderful part of Pro Se. Writers continually ask about characters we plan to do and our anthologies and digest novels for the line continue to fill up. We also have done quite a lot of reaching into the Public Domain in other media and utilizing those concepts that really deserve to have a life today. That’s what this expansion is all about. Just as the reason PULP OBSCURA was started centers around introducing readers concepts forgotten or that never really saw the light of day, Pro Se intends to add to the imprint characters and concepts from old time radio, books, comic books, and other sources that truly should be shared with readers, should have had a better reception and chance to be received than they did, and definitely have a place in today’s Genre Fiction market.”

Pro Se Productions will be opening calls beginning on July 12, 2018 for new PULP OBSCURA anthologies focusing on characters from Pulp Fiction, Comic Books, old time radio, and other media that are considered to be in the Public Domain. Characters and concepts will be presented with appropriate research material and/or bibles when requested. Past and present anthologies will be part of a shared universe, but Pro Se Productions will specify in each call if using other PULP OBSCURA characters is allowed or not.

THE FIRST LADY OF NEW PULP TO RETURN -- SUBMISSIONS OPEN FOR ‘THE PULPTRESS VOLUME THREE: POSSIBILITIES’ ANTHOLOGY

In 2011, Pro Se Editor in Chief Tommy Hancock created a character to serve in a sense as a mascot for Pro Se Productions and as a representation of New Pulp. Dubbed The Pulptress, the heroine has since appeared in two anthologies of her own as well as a trilogy of digest novels by author Andrea Judy. Pro Se announces an open call for a third anthology featuring the daughter of two Pulp heroes *always unidentified* raised in the mountains of Arkansas by retired and active Pulp heroes and reformed villains. And for the first time, this anthology will be themed.

THE PULPTRESS VOLUME THREE: POSSIBILITIES will feature stories by different authors writing alternative versions of the main character. Stories may be set in a different time period reimagining The Pulptress in a different era or may be written as ‘What if’ type tales, what might have happened if things had happened a different way at some point in her life. Casting the character in a futuristic space opera or as the daughter of a Russian czar and nearly any tale in between is possible. The anthology will be book ended by pieces written by Hancock that will have The Pulptress confronting a dangerous foe that she cannot shoot or beat with her own fists-her own mind out of control.

Stories must be 8,000-10,000 words in length and feature a version of The Pulptress as the lead. Authors unfamiliar with The Pulptress should send a request to submissions@prose-press.com for all the previous works featuring the character to be sent to them. Proposals should be 1-3 paragraphs and sent to submissions@prose-press.com. If an author submitting a proposal has never submitted to Pro Se before, a four page writing sample must be included.

This is a royalty only project, with the final royalties being determined by the number of accepted stories. Deadline will be 90 days after a proposal is accepted.

All proposals must be sent to submissions@prose-press.com.

NEW WORLDS, DANGERS, AND VIEWS CLASH BENEATH THE WAVES- - ‘ALPHA ODYSSEY: DANTE’S DEEP DIVER’ OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS

Pro Se Productions, an independent publisher of Genre Fiction, always seeks out ideas that take established concepts and turn them on their heads, so to speak, even if those ideas sometimes come from the mind of a sixteen year old boy. ALPHA ODYSSEY: DANTE’S DEEP DIVER, an anthology concept created by Braeden Hancock, is now open for submissions.

“First,” says Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “let’s get the obvious out of the way. Four years ago, my oldest son Braeden brought me a piece he’d started to write as an idea for a book of stories he wanted to do. Although his interests turned elsewhere as high school moved on and he went to college, I’d held onto this beginning of an idea because it was something special. And now it’s time to see what the best writers today can do with ALPHA ODYSSEY: DANTE’S DEEP DIVER.

“The basis of the concept,” says Hancock, “isn’t completely new, but the approach to the idea is different. Set just ten years in the future, the world as we know it has come to a realization that space exploration is not feasible or possible for many reasons…and that perhaps the best place to find new worlds and resources may be beneath our own oceans. To this end, a department set up within the United Nations to originally oversee universal exploration turns its resources to creating the most advanced submersible craft ever created-The Alpha Odyssey. DANTE’S DEEP DIVER will explore the first missions of this marvel of technology and its heroic and complicated crew.

“The strongest part of this concept is set up within the first few lines of what Braeden originally wrote. The world has reached a point of agreement, at least on exploring beyond our own land. That means a whole host of possibilities for stories in this anthology. Maybe not everyone is united, but it’s unusual for stories to be placed in a world where peace and exploration are primary and the goal and where people of all types may confront and discover new vistas together. It’s a concept others, like Gene Rodenberry, have explored, and I feel like ALPHA ODYSSEY is a great stage to write about a possible brighter future as well.”

Stories for ALPHA ODYSSEY: DANTE’S DEEP DIVER must be 8-10,000 words in length. A bible will be available for this call by emailing submissions@prose-press.com. A proposal of 100-500 words must be submitted to submissions@prose-press.com. Authors not previously published by Pro Se Productions must submit a writing sample of at least two pages with their proposals.

Final deadline for completed stories is 90 days following acceptance of proposals. Payment will be in the form of royalties, the percentage determined by number of accepted submissions. These are considered works for hire due to use of characters owned by the creator.

THE MASTER MYSTIC RETURNS IN LATEST PULP OBSCURA VOLUME -- THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SEMI DUAL DEBUTS!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

An innovative Publisher of Genre Fiction known for reviving forgotten Pulp characters in new tales, Pro Se Productions announces the latest release from its Pulp Obscura imprint, in conjunction with Altus Press. Featuring a character of mystery and intrigue, The New Adventures of Semi Dual is now available in print and digital format.

“Semi Dual,” says Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is unlike any other occult investigator to follow him, primarily because he incorporates aspects of every type of mystic detective you could imagine. Aloof, mysterious, dangerous, adventurous, intelligent, and more, Semi Dual is the ultimate occult investigator. Also, his story as told originally was so involved and intricate, the character essentially demands new stories be written about him and Pulp Obscura is glad to oblige.”

Prepare to be amazed and astonished as the first occult detective of Pulp Fiction walks once more from the halls of the Urania Building and joins the fight against evil! Pulp Obscura, an imprint of Pro Se Productions, in conjunction with Altus Press proudly presents 'The New Adventures of Semi Dual'! Created by J. U. Giesy and J. B. Smith, Semi Dual was considered Pulp's first occult detective. Semi Dual, also known as Prince Abdul Omar of Persia, was an astrologer, a mystic, a telepath, and a psychologist. Semi Dual's name was based, in part, on his methods of investigation: "by dual solutions-- one material for material minds-- the other occult, for those who cared to sense a deeper something back of the philosophic lessons interwoven in the narrative." Assisted by his allies at Glace and Bryce, Private Investigators, Semi Dual peels away the layers of mystery to shine light on the darkness!

From out of the past comes new tales of The Master Mystic! The New Adventures of Semi Dual by I. A. Watson, Kevin Noel Olson, and James Palmer! Available from Pulp Obscura and Pro Se Productions!

Bound in a haunting cover by Mike Fyles with logo design and print formatting by Sean Ali, The New Adventures of Semi Dual is available now at Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Adventures-Semi-Dual/dp/1511433353/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1428110457&sr=8-2 and Pro Se’s own store at www.prose-press.com for 9.00.

These three new adventures of Semi Dual are also available as an Ebook, designed and formatted by Russ Anderson and available for only $2.99 for the Kindle at http://www.amazon.com/New-Adventures-Semi-Dual-ebook/dp/B00VISS14A/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&sr=8-2&qid=1428110457 and for most digital formats via Smashwords at http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/532101.

Lash has an amazing array of equipment and devices of his own design that he employs in his cases. When Pro Se Productions offered me the chance to write a Lynn Lash tale-sanctioned by the estate of Mr. Dent -- I had the greatest thrill of my writing career. Pro Se Productions, a publisher of Genre Fiction and New Pulp working with Mister Boeckman, now breathes new life into these classic characters with its imprint- Charles Boeckman Presents. And Author R. P. Steeves has written a tale based on Mr. Boeckman’s work that is the first Pro Se Single Shot in the Boeckman imprint- The Coldest Case!

“There’s nothing like,” says Tommy Hancock, Pro Se Productions Editor in Chief, “a well told mystery short story with lead characters you can invest in, follow the mystery with, and enjoy even getting shot at alongside. Charles Boeckman created several like this in his long career of Pulp writing and R. P. Steeves continues doing the exact same thing with two of my favorite Boeckman creations in The Coldest Case.”

In the wake of the investigation of Pat Taylor (From Boeckman’s original tale), Detective Mike O’Shean and reporter Lil Brown have been seeing each other more regularly. They are getting close, and Mike has taken an interest in Lil’s work. She has been writing about cold cases, unsolved murders from before the war. O’Shean learns that Lil’s stepmother was murdered when she was in school. Her father was the prime suspect, but he was acquitted due to lack of evidence. But now, after travelling the world for the last decade, he is in town, and not two days after he arrives, the one remaining witness to the original crime turns up dead, poisoned in the same fashion as Lil’s stepmother. CLASSIC PULP AUTHOR’S CHARACTERS RIDE THE RANGE ANEW! ‘CHARLES BOECKMAN PRESENTS THE WILD WEST’ DEBUTS!

Known as an innovator in Genre Fiction, Pro Se Productions announces the latest volume in its Charles Boeckman Presents imprint. Featuring characters originally created by Pulp Author Charles Boeckman, Charles Boeckman Presents The Wild West returns classic Pulp heroes and villains to the range, courtesy of two of today’s best authors.

“Pro Se Productions,” says Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of and Partner in Pro Se Productions, “is more than honored to be responsible for bringing fantastic characters created by Charles Boeckman to modern readers in new tales. Mister Boeckman has an immense talent for breathing as much humanity into characters as he does heroism. His western leads aren’t the movie matinee idols, but men and women with wounds, both physical and otherwise, and staring down a six gun in more than one way. That makes revivals of Boeckman’s western work perfect for modern writers and readers.”

No period in American History was as untamed, dangerous, and exciting as what we refer to as ‘The Wild West’. And no man wrote gunslingers, lawmen, and ordinary folks made extraordinary in lawless cowtowns and harsh landscapes like Charles Boeckman. And now, those heroes crafted first by Boeckman in classic Western Pulp magazines live again in new tales from Pro Se Productions. Charles Boeckman Presents The Wild West!

Authors Phillip Drayer Duncan and Terry Alexander load their six guns with new stories featuring Boeckman’s distinct characters of the West. Ride along with men who make life and death choices on the turn of a hat and card, the slip of the tongue, or the wrong look. The western is a cornerstone of American fiction and Charles Boeckman’s legacy as one of its best storytellers lives on in Charles Boeckman Presents The Wild West. From Pro Se Productions.

Charles Boeckman Presents The Wild West featuring an intense cover and logo design by Jeff Hayes and print formatting by Percival Constantine is available for $9.00 in print via Amazon and at Pro Se’s own store. Nancy Hansen's Way

Nancy Hanson writes fantasy. No, not the new, fancy-schmancy spin-off fantasies like Dark Urban, or Supernatural Romance, or any of those. She writes fantasy in the way it was written years ago.

The kind of fantasy that would make Tolkien proud. (And probably a little jealous.)

Nancy blends her love for fantastic settings with her love for pulp style action and straightforward storytelling. And that means you should get to know her better.

Tell us a bit about your latest work.

Well I always have something going! I’m primarily a fantasy writer, though I will tackle other genres. My second book, which just came out in January 2012 is an anthology of three short stories written for Pro Se and set in the same world as FORTUNE’S PAWN, which debuted last August (2011). TALES OF THE VAGABOND BARDS is the first release under my new imprint Hansen’s Way, which right now is going to feature other such collections of stories written in that overarching world.

I tend to do a lot of epic/heroic sword & sorcery tales with a mythical quasi-medieval background. This anthology is no exception, but the main characters here are not wizards or warriors, but bards who fight primarily with song and word rather than swords and magic. In this land I’ve created, there has been a big push by an upstart religion to rewrite history so that humanity is the center of the universe and completely faultless in any conflicts with other humanoid groups, such as Elves, Dwarves, and Fairy people. Older beliefs are shunned and history is being sifted through and rewritten. As the frontier for the humans expands, it pushes the other races of beings farther back, creating even more conflicts, since the pervading belief is humans are superior beings. Since a good portion of the human populace is illiterate or nearly so, the Vagabond Bards are a group musicians, poets, actors and singers dedicated to educating and assisting the masses so that the mistakes of the past are never forgotten. Unfortunately that has become a very dangerous occupation, opposed by what is gradually becoming a state religion. The three tales in the book involved three different bards in specific circumstances, doing what they do best.

What are the themes and subjects you tend to revisit in your work?

Whether I’m writing humans, elves, aliens, or troglodytes, I try and show the commonality amongst all sentient beings. The lifestyle, language and thought process might be different, but inside, we all have the same hopes and dreams. I try not to make the villains as clear cut cookie cutter evil as they are complex and twisted. I tend to favor less than idealized heroic characters because mine are often the underdog who gets thrust into a situation and rises to the occasion. I think that’s something we can all identify with. I use a lot of female leads because that’s something that is something pulp really hasn’t done much of.

A lot of what I write—even in fantasy—comes right out of the news. For instance, the other day I was giving a final read through a story I wrote a while back that has a monk who was once a warrior entering an archery contest. His reason for being there? His mission supports war veterans who are homeless and permanently injured and the monks who minister to them want to use the money to expand and offer more beds and services. That is a very contemporary theme; a private sector individual who uses what he knows to make a difference in the lives of veterans who gave their all, in a world that has seemingly turned its back on them.

The idea is not to preach to readers, but to touch them somehow. When you enjoy a story and can see a bit of yourself in a character or your life in the tale, when you have some strong feelings about the situation portrayed, and wind up with that ultimate good feeling about the outcome, then I’ve done my job correctly.

What would be your dream project?

I’d love to have someone like Peter Jackson, who did such a marvelous job with THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, bring my world to life as well. I’d love to sit in as the consultant and watch that happen!

I always say aim high and dream big, just be prepared to do the groundwork to get to that point.

If you have any former project to do over to make it better, which one would it be, and what would you do?I’m actually doing that right now… FORTUNE’S PAWN and the rest of the trilogy it belongs to started out as a huge 850+ page, plodding mainstream fantasy novel. I wrote that monstrosity back between 2000-2003, and shopped it and some short stories set in the same world around for a while with no luck. Having fallen into Pro Se Press’ lap in 2010, I got a quick education in how to write pulp short stories, and did that for six months or so before we started talking bigger projects, like a novel. Pulp novels are a lot shorter than the mainstream fantasy I was used to reading and writing, and the pacing is far faster. When the decision was made to keep the essential story of my book but break it up, I had to reread it first. I’ll tell you, after writing all that high paced action and adventure stuff, I found good long portions of it were BORING! So I carved it into rough thirds, and started reworking what I had, keeping what was good and necessary, and writing entirely new scenes. I had fought this idea before but now I am glad I’ve done it, because the storyline I have going now is far superior to what I had, and the main character went from a simple victim of circumstances to a feisty young woman who plunges right into her destiny.

So if I had to do that over, I would have written the shorter, more high action books, and probably have gotten published a lot sooner.

What inspires you to write?

I’ve always been a dreamer and a story teller by nature. You should have heard some of the elaborate excuses I gave my parents when things went wrong... We lived in a neighborhood where there weren’t many playmates, so my sister and I would act out scenes from our favorite TV shows, and write ourselves in as new characters. We whiled away entire summer vacations that way, because my family couldn’t afford camp or vacations for us.

I was always an avid reader, I’ve been know to open encyclopedias and dictionaries and devour whatever was on that page. I was that one kid in class who actually looked forward to the essay questions on the test because I knew I had a good chance of winging it. I once got an above average passing grade for writing an entire book report on why I didn’t finish reading the book (because I didn’t like it).

In high school I was given a last minute project no one else could dig up info on, simply because I’d been absent and it was the only thing left. It was a report on debtors’ prison in Dickens’ London, and I had to explain how it worked. I hunted for a week and couldn’t find any new resources, and the deadline was closing, so… I created the entire system from scratch in one night. It must have been convincing, because even with citing the same resources others had hunted through and not found much in, I got an A. I have a feeling the teacher knew what I had done, but was intrigued that I had imagined such a plausible setup. It was very detailed description.

I’ve read a lot of fiction, primarily fantasy over the last fifteen years or so, and that plays heavily into what I write. In all honesty though, the whole world around me is an inspiration. I’m someone who watches people and notices what motivates them, bringing them together or tearing them apart. I see things in the news, online, catch snatches of conversations, or dig up little interesting facts that will spark a story. Now and then I’ll get a story idea in my sleep; I tend to have big colorful cinematic dreams complete with music, that look like movie trailers. The first Vagabond Bards story came from one of those dreams that I adapted to my ongoing world, and that seeded the rest of the series.

You have to stay open and carry something to write with on you at all times. You never know when an idea will strike.

What writers have influenced your style and technique?

From Tolkien came the idea of a big world with a long history and lush backdrop. From Jack London I learned that both people and creatures have a motivation for what they do, and it isn’t always pleasant. From Steinbeck I learned to wring the hearts of the readers by showing them everyday people in extraordinary situations. Hemingway showed me you can say a lot with a few words, so don’t spell everything out and trust that the reader is going to get it once you’re done. Robert E. Howard taught me that breathless pacing and endless action makes for a darn good page turning read. David Eddings and Joel Rosenberg (the sci fi author) proved a series can be fascinating from beginning to end if you have characters the readers fall in love with. Joseph Campbell showed me that all cultures have the same archetypes for heroes and mystical beliefs. Pioneering female speculative fictioneers like Andre Norton, C.J. Cherryh, Anne McCaffrey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Ardath Mayhar showed me that you can write in what is thought of as a male dominated sector of fiction, and if you’re good enough, and willing to do what it takes to see print, you will succeed.

A couple of women who are more noteworthy outside of writing have been a big influence on me too. Helen Keller did write, but her entire life was a huge inspiration because she had so much to overcome, and she did it with such grace and determination. And Anna Mary Robertson Moses—AKA ‘Grandma Moses’—pointed out that you’re never too old to try something new and be a success at it, so if you have to get your family grown and on their own first, do so and then pour all your life experiences into your creations.

Where would you rank writing on the "Is it an art or it is a science continuum?" Why?

Writing is an art that has a strong footing in science. Since the dawn of time, mankind as a whole has had this hunger to leave behind some evidence of our passage through this world; otherwise we wouldn’t have the cave paintings, carvings, and decorated pot shards we keep digging up. Once language became sophisticated, we told stories; initially oral and eventually coded in designs that represent meanings. Most of those early tales portrayed life events like births, deaths, hunting, where to gather food, warfare, and natural phenomena or disasters through the filter of our beliefs in some higher meaning to it all… All those things are rather scientific, even on that very primitive level of understanding that gave them supernatural powers. Some of those stories I am sure were trumped up as they were passed along; tales were added to and embellished. I don’t see how that’s terribly different from what writers do now. We’re still telling the same kind of stories about big daring deeds and those who faced them.

Any other upcoming projects you would like to plug?

I’ve recently finished a couple more short stories destined for PRO SE PRESENTS. The sequel to FORTUNE’S PAWN is also done and has been turned in, and I am almost finished collecting stories for another Hansen’s Way anthology. Both of those books, the novel and the anthology, will be out later this year from Pro Se. There’s a couple of special projects I have fingers in, one of which is Pulp Obscura, where I have three different short stories to write, and am doing the background studying for those now. You might even see some things from me that aren’t fantasy, or strictly intended for an adult audience.

I do some editing for Pro Se as well, so I have had a lurking presence behind the scenes too.

PULP OBSCURA ADDS TWO CLASSIC CHARACTERS FROM PULP'S GREATEST CREATOR!

Pro Se Productions, an up-and-coming Publisher in the New Pulp field and known for original characters, announces today an exciting addition to its first foray into classic Pulp characters, the PULP OBSCURA line.

As previously announced, Pro Se Productions in conjunction with Altus Press, the premier producer of pulp reprints as well as the Publisher of The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage written by Will Murray, will be producing collections of New Pulp tales based on characters that Altus is reprinting. These characters will not necessarily be the better-known pulp characters, but rather largely unknown and forgotten heroes and villains from pulp’s golden era. Although many of these characters, such as Richard Knight, the aviator hero featured in the first PULP OBSCURA volume from Pro Se, are currently in the public domain, Pro Se reveals today that not only will there be volumes of PULP OBSCURA involving characters requiring permission and licensing to use, but the two characters currently in question were created by possibly the best known and respected classic pulp author ever.

“Pro Se is absolutely proud,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor-in-Chief of Pro Se Productions stated, “to be able to say that with the sanction of the representative of the heirs of Norma Dent, PULP OBSCURA will include collections featuring brand new tales written by modern writers of two heroes created and originally written by Lester Dent.”

Later in 2012, Altus Press has plans to reprint the original stories written by Lester Dent of two of his characters, both falling into the ‘gadget detective’ category, a particular niche that Dent often wrote in and one that definitely carried over into his Doc Savage stories. These two characters, Foster Fade, the Crime Spectacularist and Lynn Lash will appear in Altus reprint editions and will also appear in anthologies of New Pulp tales featuring the characters as companion volumes to the Altus reprints.

“I can’t really express,” Hancock said, “how absolutely cool it is to be able to be a part of bringing two classic Dent characters back to life in a sense. Although some pulp fans, particularly Dent devotees, are aware of Fade and Lash, they are largely unknown characters to many readers today. To be able to not only have their original adventures in print again with Altus Press, but to also be producing and creating brand new stories to continue where Mr. Dent left off and to bring awareness to not just these characters, but to the wonderful variety of characters that still live from the Pulp Age as well as the lesser known work of Dent himself, its simply astounding for me to even be associated with it.”

Although definite dates for publishing have not been established, Hancock stated that recruiting the writers for the first two anthologies, one featuring each character, would begin immediately and would follow the same standard applied to previous PULP OBSCURA titles. Anyone interested in having the opportunity to propose a tale for either THE NEW ADVENTURES OF FOSTER FADE, THE CRIME SPECTACULARIST VOLUME ONE or THE NEW ADVENTURES OF LYNN LASH VOLUME ONE simply needs to email Hancock at proseproductions@earthlink.net. Those interested will then, according to Hancock, be given an opportunity to make proposals in the coming days.

“Thanks,” Hancock stated, “to Matt Moring from Altus Press for coming to Pro Se and wanting to bring new life to all these classic characters that have sat dormant far too long. And much appreciation to Will Murray and the Dent heirs for allowing Pro Se and the writers we’ll gather to be a part of something the man many of us consider the best Pulp creator ever started.”

The Writer Will Take Your Questions Now (#70) -- Fan Fiction

What do you think about fan fiction?

Good question. I actually wrote several fan fictions back in the day. I used to write two of them in particular, both for a site called DCU 2020. (For those who really want to know, I wrote Spoiler 2020 and House of Secrets 2020, as well as a few other DC-based fan fictions.) All of it was a lot of fun, and it helped me fine tune my action writing, but I realized quickly that if I wanted to really work in the industry I needed to move beyond fan fiction and start trying to build a portfolio of original work.

And yes, I know there are stories about big-time comic book writers getting gigs based on fan fiction (I personally know one of them, and her lucky break, she'll admit, was not the standard way inside), but that's a one-in-a-million nowadays, and every time somebody finds a way in other than the old standby of building a portfolio of work that gets you eventually noticed, trust me, someone finds a way to plug that hole so others can't slip in that way again. *grins*

But, you more snarky folks might ask, "Hold up, there Hoss; aren't all your pulp stories and anyone writing for Marvel or DC basically writing fan fiction anyway?"

The difference is that when a publisher with the rights to using a character (even if said rights come from public domain usage) is paying you to write a story based on that character, that's not fan fiction even if you happen to be a fan of the character. You have to follow the rules that fan fiction can ignore (He-Man vs. Strawberry Shortcake, anyone?) and you have to answer to your corporate bosses.

For example, me writing a Superman story in order to have Clark fall in love with Buffy while the two of them save Harry Potter from a rabid Pokemon is clearly a fan fic, but me being paid by DC to write a Superman story for their continuity is work for hire and is adding to the core story of that character that I don't happen to own. It's like the work I'm doing for Pulp Obscura now. Sure, it plays on the same emotions that a fan fic featuring some of the old public domain characters would, but what I'm doing is adding to the mythos surrounding the characters based on the publisher's interest in building that new, ongoing story.

So, I guess for me it boils down to this: If you want to write fan fiction for your own enjoyment or for the enjoyment of those people who dig the cultural phenomenon that is the world of fan fic sites, knock yourself out. But if you want to work in the industry, leave the fan fiction behind and pursue a portfolio that shows off your stories that you've worked hard to get published in the real world (so to speak).

FIRST VOLUME FROM PULP OBSCURA DEBUTS -- THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT!

FIRST VOLUME FROM PULP OBSCURA DEBUTS -- THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT!

Pro Se Productions, a leading Publisher in the New Pulp Movement, announces today the release of the first collection from its PULP OBSCURA line.  Pro Se, in conjunction with Altus Press, noted Publisher of Pulp reprints as well as the home of Will Murray’s new Doc Savage novels, developed the PULP OBSCURA line to spotlight characters from the classic days of Pulp Fiction that are considered unknown or rare in the modern era.

“This concept,” stated Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se, “is really the brainchild of Altus Press’ founder and publisher, Matt Moring.  He saw the potential in many of the characters he plans to reprint the original adventures of via Altus Press to be used in new stories by modern day writers.  The characters he and I discussed are in the Public Domain and therefore free writers to tackle and publishers to print.  Out of that rose PULP OBSCURA, a name I’d come up with a year or so ago out of my own thoughts of one day focusing on rare characters that most people, even the hardcore Pulp fans, don’t know exist.”

The first PULP OBSCURA volume is THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT.   The title character originally appeared in FLYING ACES Magazine in the 1930s and was written by Donald E. Keyhoe, an author known later in his career for his writing on UFOs.   Appearing in numerous tales into the 1940s, Knight was considered a flying detective type, an agent of the government who used the cover of millionaire flyboy to investigate plots, usually those involving things such as lost valleys or other oddities, against America.

As stated on the book itself:
From the past flies new tales of one of Pulp’s forgotten heroes!  Pro Se Productions in conjunction with Altus Press presents the first volume in its PULP OBSCURA line!  Bringing adventures and heroes lost in yesterday blazing to life in new pulp tales today!  Six high flying, wild and weird adventures from I.A. Watson, Barry Reese, Frank Schildiner, Joshua Reynolds, Terry Alexander, and Adam Lance Garcia!

Come fly with this hero of the airways as he battles threats to America from the common to the extraordinary! The first new stories since 1942!

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT is available now from Pro Se Press as a Kick Off Special for PULP OBSCURA.  Altus Press’ volume which this New Pulp book is a companion to, THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT, VOLUME ONE, will be out within days.  In the future, Hancock explained, Altus’ reprint volume and Pro Se’s New Pulp companion volume will be released on the same day.  “We did this,” Hancock said, “as a special gift to those who have been following the development of PULP OBSCURA and readers eager to see what we’re doing.  There’s been a lot of buzz about this project, which we all greatly appreciate, and we wanted to reward that.”

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT features a spectacular cover by Mike Fyles and the cover design work of Sean Ali.  Interior Format and Design is the work of Matt Moring and the ebook design is by Russ Anderson.  THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT is now available via Pro Se’s Createspace store at https://www.createspace.com/3783368 and will be available via Amazon in print within the week, $12.00 in print.  It is also available for $2.99 for the Kindle on Amazon and in various formats at www.smashwords.com and coming soon to Barnes & Noble for the Nook.

This first release from PULP OBSCURA is featured in the following trailer:
