AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS SUN KOH : HEIR TO ATLANTIS

Airship 27 Productions answers the question, “Who is Sun Koh?”

During the 1930s German pulp writer Paul Muller wrote a series of adventures featuring his hero, Sun Koh: Heir of Atlantis. From the very start he was intended to an Aryan version of America’s Doc Savage. Like Savage he was larger than life and accompanying him on his adventurers was a group of loyal, unique individuals. Whereas Doc Savage was a man of science and his companions all experts in various technical fields, Sun-Koh’s stories were slanted towards mythology and mysticism. He was supposedly a time-traveler from the sunken continent of Atlantis, a member of the royal family and master of arcane abilities. Although there were plenty of super scientific gizmos in his adventures, it was the magic that took center stage. His aides were magicians, immortals and religious Hindu assassins. Quite an eclectic mix.

In 2010, in the midst of the New Pulp explosion, Dr. Art Sippo wrote a brand-new adventure novel featuring these characters. “Sun-Koh: Heir of Atlantis.” It premiered to rousing acclaim by pulp fans and a sequel was planned. Sadly that second book never materialized and eight years later, the first book is out of print. Now Airship 27 Productions is about to rectify all that. Ron Fortier, Airship 27 Productions’ Managing Editor, entered into an agreement with Dr. Sippo to reprint “Sun-Koh: Heir to Atlantis.”

“We couldn’t be happier,” Fortier reported after getting Dr. Sippo’s green light. “Whatever one’s thoughts on this German-based character, he clearly has a place in the history of pulps and Art has written a whopping great book that demands to stay in print and we at Airship 27 are going to see it does.”

Now Dr. Art Sippo’s controversial New Pulp offering returns in this newly expanded Airship 27 edition with an introduction by Pulp Factory Award winner writer, Andrew Salmon and interior illustrations by Art Director Rob Davis and a stunning cover by Adam Shaw. The book also contains a Bonus Back-Up feature spotlighting Sun Koh’s amazing crew.

Art's Reviews Opens The Ruby Files Vol. 2

The Ruby Files Vol. 2 authors Ron Fortier, Alan J. Porter, Bobby Nash, and Sean Taylor on the latest episode of Art Sippo's Art's Reviews podcast for an in-depth look at the newly released The Ruby Files Vol. 2 from Airship 27 Productions. We also take a look back at the award-winning The Ruby Files Vol. 1. You can hear the episode at http://artsreviews.libsyn.com/at-long-last-the-ruby-files-volume-2-is-here.

NOTE: There were some technical issues with the recording near the end. Just wanted to warn ya.

One of the most popular New Pulp characters is back!  Rick Ruby, noir PI extraordinaire, returns in a  second volume of stories from some of the best authors in New Pulp.  The first volume was one of the most popular and critically recognized books in 2012 and has remained a perennial favorite.  Now Rick is back and the stories are better than ever.In this show I interview Ron Fortier, Bobby Nash, Sean Taylor, and Alan Porter about their contributions to this new volume.   We delve into the origins of the character and the inspiration that each of the authors had for their stories.

UNFORTUNATELY, a thunderstorm landed on us towards the end of the program and the last 10 minutes of the interview was lost.  But there is so much good stuff here (including a few tangents) that I don't think the fans will mind. There are also lotsa great xtras and links that feature the work of these fine authors so check 'em out.

The Ruby Files, Volume 2 is available at Amazon (paperback and Kindle), Barnes and Noble (Paperback) and as always over at the Airship 27 Hangar (paperback, and PDF, see below).

Pro Se Productions, a leading publisher in the New Pulp Movement, announces an addition to its already dynamic publishing calendar for 2012!

“Even though the New Pulp Movement,” stated Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is still in its infancy, relatively speaking, there have already been some writers and works that stand out.  Authors and books who will truly be remembered as being the best of what New Pulp has to offer and considered classics by those after us, and even by many today. One such book from the last two years was "Sun Koh: Heir of Atlantis" written by Dr. Art. Sippo.   Pro Se is extremely proud to announce that we will be publishing and promoting Volume Two of The Collected Stories of Sun Koh, tentatively titled ‘ Quest of the Secret Masters’ written once again by Dr. Art Sippo.”

According to Sippo, “Sun Koh was a character created by Paul Mueller for Germany’s pulp magazines who was based on Doc Savage. He was intended to be the Nietzschean Übermensch. He was an Aryan prince from ancient Atlantis who came to the future and descended out of the sky to land in London. He had come to prepare for the coming of the next Ice Age when Atlantis would rise again from the ocean. He would save all those who were fit to survive and use them to repopulate the lost continent. Of course, those he considered to be most fit were of Aryan/German extraction according to the theories of the Theosophists whose mythology had been taken over by the Nazis.”

“Between 1933 and 1938 there were 150 Sun Koh stories published. Sun Koh epitomized the Aryan ideal and fought all sorts of villains and super-science threats very similar to those from the Doc Savage stories.  Strangely enough, the Nazis found these stories frivolous and in some cases subversive. Eventually they forced the series to end and Mueller had Sun Koh discover and conquer the newly risen Atlantis inside the Hollow Earth in 1938. That brought an end to the series.”

Sippo continued, “Sun Koh was the most successful of all the Doc Savage clones (if we exclude the comic characters like Superman and Batman). I was fascinated by the idea of such a character having so many adventures in a language that I could not read. I became frustrated and decided to write my own stories about Sun Koh preserving as much of the original adventure ideas as possible and excluding all the Nazi nonsense.”

“We are ecstatic,” Hancock stated, “to be a part of the work Art is doing with this great character.   He has taken a character that could have been lost to history and even more, marred by the country and period it originated in, and using the original tales and roots of the story, created and woven an intelligent, action packed adventure that not only does not skirt the philosophical issues involved, but instead turns them on their ear by showing Sun Koh to be more than what label anyone puts on him.   Art writes him as, even as a Prince of Atlantis, a very human hero who has to make choices about what sort of man he will be in the world around him.”

“Quest of the Secret Masters” is currently in production and will be published in late 2012 from Pro Se Productions!   Press releases featuring more information and interviews with Dr. Sippo and more will follow in coming weeks as publication approaches!
