Ron Fortier -- Of Course It's an Art

Ron Fortier is the Cap'n. I'm proud to call him editor, publisher, and friend. He's 1/2 of the brains and brawn behind Airship 27 Productions, and a damn fine writer and purveyor of pulp pulchritudes.

Tell us a bit about your latest work.

Considering I usually have three to four things in the fire at the same time, that simple question could be overly long. So let’s Reader’s Digest it. Comics-wise, I’ve just finished writing a 108-pg Black Bat graphic novel which artist Mike Belcher is drawing and will self-publish when finished. Pulp-wise, I’m in the middle of a new novel that will be a prequel to my Brother Bones series. And I recently finished a short story for Tommy Hancock’s tribute book for our late dear friend, Derrick Ferguson.

What happened in your life that prompted you to become a writer?

Comics happened. My Dad started giving me comics when I was all of five years old. I couldn’t even read, but I sure could follow the pictures. From that I got a sense of narrative and then by the time I could read, it was all I ever wanted to do. Ergo, it only became natural for me to get the bug and want to tell my own stories.

What inspires you to write?

The joy and pleasure I can give others, be they friends and families or total strangers. If my stories can entertain people in a positive way, that reward is priceless to me.

What are the themes and subjects you tend to revisit in your work?

The standard good versus evil is at the core of anything I write. Whether it’s a comedy superhero like Mr. Jigsaw defeating bad guys in his own hilarious fashion, on the creepy undead Brother Bones blowing away gangsters. With that as a foundation, I can layer on other themes such as loyalty, courage and sacrifice. Often times doing the right thing requires lots of sacrifice and that is great drama.

What would be your dream project?

Writing a graphic novel detailing the making of the 1938 movie KING KONG.

What writers have influenced your style and technique?

By the time I was 13, I was an avid reader and discovered Edgar Rice Burroughs, Edmond Hamilton, Richard Prather and Robert Heinlein. But the one writer who totally shaped my style was Evan Hunter writing his 87th Precinct mysterious under the pseudonym of Ed McBain. His economy of words and efficiency in using dialog was amazing and I marveled at it. Enough to try and emulate him every time I write…even to this day.

If you have any former project to do over to make it better, which one would it be, and what would you do?

I once co-wrote a pulp entitled GHOST SQUAD with Andrew Salmon that we’d hoped to be the start of a pulp series. Unfortunately the book was coming in short and I urged to Andrew to extend a certain car-chase sequence. It was padding and we were called on it by several reviewers. That was all on me. If I could go back re-edit it, that scene would be severely trimmed. It was a hard lesson to learn.

Where would you rank writing on the "Is it an art or it is a science continuum?" Why?

Of course it’s an art. It is nothing you put in a can or build in a machine shop, no matter what formula you envision. Whereas I consider all art spiritual, a gift from the Creator. All of us possess such a gift and have an obligation to use it for the betterment of mankind, be you a cook, auto mechanic, or singer. Writing is a gift, it is art.

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

The actual creating itself. As my old pal Derrick Ferguson always said, “You can’t correct it if it isn’t on the page.” I procrastinate way too much, always coming up with excuses to avoid that blank screen. But when I finally write something, the pump is primed and away we go.

How do your writer friends help you become a better writer? Or do they not?

All my writing colleagues inspire me.  As I said before, I’m a lazy writer. When I see them producing so much work, it pushes me to do more. To join in the fun. I owe them all a great deal. People like Jim Beard, Barry Reese, Nancy Hansen, Fred Adams Jr., Tommy Hancock and so many others.

What does literary success look like to you?

The words…THE END on a page.

Any other upcoming projects you would like to plug?

Too many to remember them all. I’ve done a really different kind of Dracula story that will be coming from an Australian publisher later this year. And who knows, maybe those producers out in Hollywood pushing a Brother Bones TV series may get lucky. Time will tell.

AIRSHIP 27 PRODUTION PRESENTS BROTHER BONES – TALES OF CAPE NOIRE

Airship 27 Production is thrilled to announce the release of “Brother Bones – Tales of Cape Noire” fifth in the bestselling series by writer/editor Ron Fortier. Only this time Fortier has brought a few friends along to play in his pulp sandbox.

Cape Noire is a bustling, commercial seaport on the northwest coast. It is also an urban jungle where over a million souls reside. Among these are monsters both human and supernatural. Keeping them in check is the skull masked Brother Bones, the Undead Avenger. In this new collection of tales, writers Fred Adams Jr., Andy Fix and Drew Meyer join creator Ron Fortier in presenting the next chapter in Hell’s own backyard.

“The idea for this book came about a few years ago,” Fortier reports. “Several colleagues mentioned the fact that after four books, comics and a RPG game module, many of the supporting characters I’d created showed tons of potential for their own adventures. Realizing that might work, I reached out to my three amigos and asked if each would like to take on one of these figures in a new story. This book is the result of their overwhelmingly happy replies.”

Dr. Bugosi, the Mad Scientist of Cape Noire is dead and Harry Beest, the gorilla mobster, is assailed on all fronts as he tries to salvage the dead man’s journals. Meanwhile the sexy vampire, Sister Blood encounters a creature descended of island magic while trying to save a friend. At the same time Lt. Dan Rains hunts a kidnapped girl amidst a bloody gang war that threatens to flood in streets in blood.

Here is a mash-up of action, adventure and horror as only the saga of Brother Bones can provide. “Tales of Cape Noire” is a quartet of fevered nightmares you will not soon forget. Pulp Factory Award winning Art Director Rob Davis provides the interior illustrations and artist Michael Stribling provided the stunning cover.

Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to announce City of Lost Souls

Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to announce the fourth title in Ron Fortier’s daring new pulp series featuring the Undead Avenger, Brother Bones.  “City of Lost Souls,” continues the saga of Cape Noire’s supernatural protector, the relentless skull masked vigilante who exist for only one purpose; the utter destruction of evil.

In the past three volumes, pulp fans were introduced to Tommy Bonello, a cruel sadistic hitman who found himself cursed with a conscience and then was murdered by his own twin brother, Jack. But hell didn’t await the slain gunman, rather his soul was chosen by the Cosmic Fates to return to the land of the living and there become the gruesome avatar of justice, Brother Bones. The vengeful spirit complied by taking over his brother’s body, effectively ending Jack’s life and thus becoming an animated zombie.

Starting with “Brother Bones The Undead Avenger,” the character burst on to the New Pulp scene over ten years ago. His remarkable debut was followed by a full length novel, “Brother Bones – Six Days of the Dragon,” by author Roman Leary, working under Fortier’s guidance. The following year saw the release of Fortier’s second collection, “Brother Bones – Tapestry of Blood.” Now comes the long awaited fourth book, another anthology featuring five gripping tales of murder, mayhem and the unstoppable Undead Avenger.

“I sometimes think Bones is in charge,” says Fortier, who is also Airship 27 Productions’ Managing Editor. “His stories propel me along as if I were merely a chronicler. Bones and the entire cast of Cape Noire have, over the years, taken on realistic characteristics in my imagination. In this new collection, we find old characters from previous stories resurfacing in new ways I’d never have conceived of ten years ago. Each is taking center stage with startling new stories that will definitely change the landscape of Cape Noire forever.”

The longest tale in the collection is “The Synthetic Man” and for the first time ever, Brother Bones combats a classic golden age pulp villain, Doctor Satan. “This was a real challenge,” Fortier adds. “I realized bringing Satan into Cape Noire would set a precedent allowing other classic pulp characters to enter this world. Where that will take us right now is anybody’s guess.”

Joining Fortier to provide ten black and white illustrations is Rob Davis, Art Director for Airship 27 Productions and super graphic artist Michael Stribling created the beautiful stunning cover. And this new book is soon to be followed by a brand new role-playing game module, “Ron Fortier’s Cape Noire” from Scaldcrow Games due out within a few weeks. The popularity of Brother Bones continues to grow and these new entries are sure to add to that momentum.

Ron Fortier announces the first New Pulp movie -- Brother Bones!

Dear Friends, Families & Colleagues,

After 45 yrs as a professional writer, I’m about to see one of my fondest dreams come true. A feature-length motion picture is now in production in Seattle, WA, based on my pulp character – BROTHER BONES – THE UNDEAD AVENGER.  He has appeared in short story collections, novels and comics since I created him over ten years ago. But for that to happen, Franklin-Husser Entertainment LLC, need your support. Making a film of this kind is not going to be cheap.

Thus a Kickstarter Campaign has been launched at the link below. I would ask you to take a few minutes to look it over. The talented assembled for this movie is truly outstanding, including two veteran Hollywood film composers. Again, we need your help and note, even taking this letter and forwarding it to the other recipients in your e-mail files would be of tremendous assistance in helping to spread the word. So in the end, my heartfelt thanks.

DAVID STOKER is BROTHER BONES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DAVID STOKER is BROTHER BONES

Seattle-based, actor, David Stoker, has been cast as the lead in the new Franklin-Husser Entertainment LLC production of “Brother Bones – The Undead Avenger.” Based on the New Pulp stories by Ron Fortier, Brother Bones is the first of the New Pulp heroes to be adapted to film. Auditions were held last week for twenty speaking parts and press releases focusing on each actor and role will be forthcoming. This is company’s third and most ambitious project to date.

A Kickstarter Campaign will soon be launched to fund the project and if successful, principle shooting will begin in late August.  Brother Bones is a period tale set in the mid-1930s in the fictional Northwest metropolis of Cape Noire.

Stoker is a veteran of both stage and screen and lists his acting skills as martial arts, voice over and improvisation.

“I was blown away by the level of intensity David brought to his readings,” Fortier reported. “He has a level of energy that is crucial to playing a character such as Brother Bones and I personally cannot wait to see him don the skull mask.”

“The funny thing is,” Erik Franklin (writer, director, co-producer) said “he came in to read for another part altogether, and he would have been perfect for it. But when I saw that he could project menace as well as vulnerability, I asked him to read for Tommy/Jack on the spot. With only a few minutes of preparation, he nailed the part!”
