Bobby Nash on Moonstone's Paladins!

Tell us a bit about Paladins, please.

I wrote a novel for Moonstone Books called PaladinsPaladins is a team-up story featuring several pulp characters, old and new. In the best heroic tradition, the characters find themselves facing a common foe and team-up to save the world. When the call came in from Joe Gentile at Moonstone Books to work on this, there was already some of the parts in place, including the title. The Night Marcher is a new character being introduced so I was introduced to her. I did not create her but enjoyed fleshing out her world. Domino Lady came on board when I did. She and I make a good team, and I’m always thrilled to write Domino Lady.

In Paladins, a mysterious villain seeks items of rare power. This brings the villain and his followers/henchmen into contact with lord of the jungle, Ki-Gor, his wife, Helene Vaughn, Ravenwood: The Stepson of Mystery, The Night Marcher, Judgment’s sidekick, Nelu Qui, and The Domino Lady. Eventually, their stories converge with explosive results.

How does this one continue the themes you revisit in your work or is it something in a different vein?

Good vs. evil is a theme I revisit often.

Jason Waltman: A Man with a Plan

Jason Waltman was a visionary man. Sadly, he didn't live long enough to see those visions become realities. He was a fan of pulp, though, first and foremost. And he was perhaps the greatest cheerleader of my work I will perhaps ever know.

He passed away on November 19 last year, not long after yet another glowing post on Facebook telling me, Bobby Nash, and Barry Reese how much he loved our work and supported us. And then he was gone.

He had sent me these interview responses and I kept pushing them off because I had two series of interviews running back to back, and then Christmas came and knocked me off my schedule.

But here it is, Jason. Late, but here.

Jason Waltman was my friend, and I think you need to meet him.

Tell us a bit about your latest work.

My latest work has been a labor of love for the last 15 years. The book is called The World of Crastic.  A role-playing game for the world oldest role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 ruleset . The game is set on the world of Crastic. It's Victorian steampunk with mecha and magic. Players go against a warring nation trying to take over the world with an Emperor who acts like the Antichrist.

What happened in your life that prompted you to become a writer?

I want to be like the people I admire: Gary Gygax, Dave Arneson, Steve Jackson, Mark Tein Hagen. They sparked my imagination and creativity or role-playing game writing

What inspires you to write?

My love for fantasy and science fiction. My recent pulp-related work on Facebook is to just sharpen my skills at writing.

What are the themes and subjects you tend to revisit in your work?

This book focuses on the grand war and its effect on the world around the players. And it has love stories among the non-players character the story centers around. My other future book will deal with more contemporary themes like Christian horror.

What would be your dream project?

A book featuring The Shadow and The Domino Lady -- a Shadow over the City of Angels.

Where would you rank writing on the "Is it an art or it is a science continuum?" Why?

I wouldn’t compare myself to the great masters of the role-playing game before me.

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Sometimes I get stuck with an idea that limits my world vision and I might need help to visualize the sight and sound of the role-playing world I have in mind.

How do your writer friends help you become a better writer? Or do they not?

My favorite writers have challenged and encouraged me to keep on writing. I would personally thank people like Bobby Nash, Barry Reese, and you, Sean. They have been my secret cheerleaders and supporters. They very much supported me asking them questions about writing.

What does literary success look like to you?

Success is from looking at people sitting around a table and enjoying the adventures I create. And being able to hire freelance writers and artists.

Any other upcoming projects you would like to plug?

My next role-playing game world book will be called Guardian the Watch. It will deal with the end time of the Bible and people who are called to fight back the demon-possessed humans.

Bobby Nash's Summer of Snow

Bobby Nash isn't just a fantabulous writer -- he's also my brother in every sense of the word other than biological. He's also a prolific beast when it comes to putting words on the page. Pro. Lif. Ic. (As you'll see when read his interview below.)

Tell us a bit about your latest work.

2021 is #TheSummerofSnow for me and BEN Books. Not only will SNOW DOWN, book 6 of the Snow series be out soon, but I am also working with a group of talented authors (including some guy named Sean Taylor) to launch SNOW SHORTS, 10,000 word short stories focusing on Snow characters. In January, we launched with Snow Flies by me. In February, Gary Phillips’ Thieves’ Alley premiered, a tale featuring Snow’s friend, Big John Salmon. The plan is to release a $0.99 ebook each month then collect them in paperback, ebook, and audio. So far, we’re off to a good start.

Here’s part of the official Snow Shorts announcement: SNOW SHORTS are, as the name suggests, short stories set within the Snow universe. BEN Books has reached out to a host of fantastic writers to join Snow creator, Bobby Nash in crafting tales featuring Abraham Snow and his companions. Writers involved include Gary Phillips, Bernadette Johnson, Milton Davis, John Hartness, Beverly Conner, Sean Taylor, Charles F. Millhouse, Brian K. Morris, Mike Gordon, Barry Reese, and more. Covers will be provided by Jeffrey Hayes of PlasmaFire Graphics.

You can keep up with all things SNOW at www.abrahamsnow.com.

What happened in your life that prompted you to become a writer?

I am a glutton for punishment with delusions of grandeur. Or something like that. Ha! Ha! I’ve always been fascinated with stories, how they are told, how they come together, and the characters that populate them. It started with TV. I would become invested in the characters and then started coming up with my own stories set in those worlds, not written down, but when I went outside to play, I became a crewman on Captain Kirk’s away mission or I went on a dangerous mission with Colonel Steve Austin. That sort of thing. As I got older and discovered comic books, I found a new outlet for that creativity. Later, came short stories, then novels, and it’s been a rollercoaster ride ever since.

What inspires you to write?

The stories keep coming. They’re inside my head. The characters won’t shut up until I write their adventures down for others to read. It’s crazy. I think I may be crazy. I dunno. Thankfully. The voices in my head are entertaining as they go on their myriad adventures. I also love putting the work out there for readers to hopefully enjoy. I get a thrill when someone tells me they read something of mine and liked it. That inspires me to do it again.

What are the themes and subjects you tend to revisit in your work?

I am a big fan of character growth. I like it when my characters discover something about themselves in the course of the story, both good and bad. I like to root for the underdog and many of my stories have an element of a character struggling against overwhelming odds to do the right thing. That’s heroic. Primarily, my job is to entertain. I don’t get preachy with my work. Messages sometimes work their way into stories based on the characters, but my main purpose in telling stories is to entertain the reader. First and foremost, I want the reader to have a good time with the story. Everything else is secondary.

What would be your dream project?

There are characters out there that I would like to write officially at least once. Captain America, Thor, The Fantastic Four, Buck Rogers, Star Trek, Six Million Dollar Man, things like that. I may never get the chance, but it’s good to dream.

What writers have influenced your style and technique?

Oh, so many. It’s hard to name them all. I find influence everywhere. One author writes a type of scene one way that makes me rethink my approach. Another does great characters, so I study how they do it. I also learn a lot by watching other authors at conventions and social media. I can learn a lot about promotion, interacting with fans, etc. by observing. So, yeah, influences are everywhere. I’ve been influenced by you, Sean, as well.

If you have any former project to do over to make it better, which one would it be, and what would you do?

That’s tough. I try not to look back that way lest I go mad. Ha! Ha! It’s not so much stories I would like to change, if I could, but there have been situations I’ve found myself in as part of the publishing process that I kind of wish I could do differently. It’s tricky. My first novel, Evil Ways, was originally published at a truly terrible publisher. Horrible situation. There’s a part of me that wonders how things would have gone if that had not happened. On the other hand, despite the behind the scenes woes, I had a published book in my hands and I used it to talk to other publishers, which resulted in getting more writing gigs. Would Lance Star or Domino Lady, two characters I am pretty well linked to, have happened without Evil Ways? It was sharing Evil Ways that helped land those gigs.

Where would you rank writing on the "Is it an art or it is a science continuum?" Why?

Good question. I don’t think I’ve ever considered that before. I think, for me, writing is an art, first and foremost. When a story develops and flows out of me, I’m not thinking about anything except the story and characters. I’m not considering style or grammar, length or technique. I’m living in the moment of that story. Afterward, that’s where the science comes in. I take this piece of art and mold it into something that can be sold to a reader.

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

The hardest part is getting started. There’s a joke that writing is 3% talent and 97% staying off the internet. This is an absolute truth. We as writers are often our own worst enemies. I certainly am mine. I spend more time finding things to do other than writing all the while feeling guilty because I’m not writing. It reminds me of another joke. “I am a writer. Today, I will write. But first…” and you can fill in the blank with “clean my office” or “mow the lawn” or “do laundry” and on and on… Once I put my butt in the chair and start writing, I’m usually good to go. It’s just getting me focused that’s the hard part.

How do your writer friends help you become a better writer? Or do they not?

They absolutely do. I am amazed by the talented writers I’ve met over the years. They are a great bunch or creators and I learn so much from all of them. Plus, we understand the same issues when it comes to writing. When a story isn’t working, I can tell my family and they look at me like I’m speaking a foreign language. My writer friends understand and can be a shoulder to cry on, a sounding board for ideas, and a cheerleader.

What does literary success look like to you?

Right now, success would be making a living as a writer. That’s what I’m working to achieve. In the future, success looks like “New York Times Bestselling Author Bobby Nash.” After that, success if adding “As Seen on TV” stickers on my novels. Success is very much a sliding scale. There was a time when my idea of success was finishing a novel. I did that. Then, success became getting published. I did that. Success is an ever-sliding scale.

Any other upcoming projects you would like to plug?

Oh, so many. I mentioned above Snow Down and Snow Shorts. I’m pushing Snow hard in 2021. Published by my imprint, BEN Books. Remember, in #TheSummerofSnow every day is a #SnowDay! Ha! Ha! Other books in production includes the 4 book Hunter Houston: Horror Hunter from Falstaff Books, a couple of as yet unannounced novel for Pro Se Productions, a novel sequel to Dante’s Tenth, my story in The Devil’s Due anthology for Valhalla Books, Evil Intent for BEN Books, a short story for Moonstone Books featuring The Lone Ranger, more Lance Star, more Sheriff Tom Myers, more Snow, more Domino Lady, more Nightveil, and more. 2021 is shaping up to be a big year.

AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS Presents THE RETURN OF THE DOMINO LADY

Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to announce that pulpdom’s sexiest masked adventure is back in a brand new collection of her sexy exploits.  From a gang of corrupt policemen to secret Nazis saboteurs out to destroy the Los Angeles Olympics, the beautiful and wily crime-fighter has her hands full in this new quartet of tales by Gene Moyers, Brad Mengel, Robert Ricci and Paul Findley.

“Volume One of this series was a whopping success for us,” reports Airship 27 Productions’ Managing Editor Ron Fortier.  “We couldn’t keep copies on our tables at the pulp cons.  Our readers, both men and women, are extremely fascinated by this character as there were so few female pulp heroes back in the 30s and 40s.”

Airship 27 Productions was also thrilled to reassemble the art team that made Volume One so beautiful for the fans.  Under the helm of Art Director Rob Davis, artist James Lyle delivered another 12 fantastic black and white interior illustrations while Canadian Ted Hammond offered his second Domino Lady cover; a stunning image that captures the allure and mystery inherent in this great character.

As always, lovely socialite Ellen Patrick weaves her way in and out of trouble, donning her black silk domino mask whenever injustice rears its ugly head. From the time of her father’s murder, Ellen has dedicated herself to righting wrongs.  She just does it in a most peculiar fashion becoming the pulps’ most alluring and deadly hero; the Domino Lady.

DOMINO LADY: PULPDOM’S SEXIEST AVENGER

Airship 27 Productions is excited to announce the release of their first ever Domino Lady anthology.  “The question I’m always asked is, when are you going to do a Domino Lady book?” says Managing Editor Ron Fortier.  “Truth is, we had one half done several years ago but through a series of bizarre setbacks, it ended up being finished and released by another publisher.  Getting a new Domino Lady book done under our own imprint has a personal goal of mine ever since.”

The Domino Lady first appeared in the pulps in 1936.  After graduating from the Berkeley College in California, Ellen Patrick goes off to Europe on a joy filled jaunt.  Her trip is cut short when her widowed father, D.A. Owen Patrick is murdered by gangsters.  Upon her return home she learns the corrupt authorities have no intention of finding her father’s killers. Thus she puts on a domino mask and a backless white dress to avenge him.  Though arming herself with a small .22 automatic and a syringe full of knockout serum, the Domino Lady’s most effective weapon was her sensual beauty, which often distracted her opponents until she could turn the tables on them.

Now new pulp writers, Greg Hatcher, Gene Moyers, Tim Bruckner and Kevin Findley offer up four brand new adventures of Los Angeles’ most notorious, and sexiest, crime-fighter of them all, the Domino Lady!

“Of course you can’t do a Domino Lady book without recruiting the best artists available,” Fortier continues.  “And that’s exactly what we did.”  Well known comic pro, James Lyle, provides twelve gorgeous black and interior illustrations and graphic artist Ted Hammond, known for his amazing pin-up work, produced the stunning cover that graces the cover.  All of which was then perfectly assembled by Art Director Rob Davis to create a truly beautiful package no real pulp lover should do without.

Digging Up the Deadly With Bobby Nash

Tell us a little about yourself and where readers can find out more about you and your work?

I’m a writer. I sit and stare at a computer screen for hours on end trying to come up with tales that will hopefully entertain readers.

Here’s my official bio and contact info:

From his secret lair in the wilds of Bethlehem, Georgia, Bobby Nash writes. A multitasker, Bobby is certain that he doesn’t suffer from ADD, but instead he... ooh, shiny.

When he finally manages to put fingers to the keyboard, Bobby writes novels (Evil Ways; Fantastix; Deadly Games!), comic books (Fuzzy Bunnies From Hell; Demonslayer; Domino Lady vs. The Mummy; Lance Star: Sky Ranger “One Shot”), short prose (A Fistful of Legends; Full Throttle Space Tales Vol. 2: Space Sirens; Green Hornet Case Files; Tales of The Rook; Zombies vs. Robots), novellas (Lance Star: Sky Ranger; Ravenwood: Stepson of Mystery; Nightbeat; Blackthorn: Thunder on Mars), graphic novels (Yin Yang; I Am Googol: The Great Invasion; Bloody Olde Englund), and even a little pulp fiction (Domino Lady; Secret Agent X; The Avenger; The Spider) just for good measure.  And despite what his brother says, Bobby swears he is not addicted to buying DVD box sets and can quit anytime he wants to. Really.

When not writing fiction, Bobby attends conventions and writers conferences, promotes his books, teaches writing courses and panels, and is a part-time extra in movies and television. Bobby is also the co-host of the weekly Earth Station One podcast (www.esopodcast.com) and writes for New Pulp (www.newpulpfiction.com) and All Pulp (http://allpulp.blogspot.com) news sites.

For more information on Bobby Nash please visit him at www.bobbynash.com, www.facebook.com/bobbyenash, www.twitter.com/bobbynash, www.lance-star.com, and http://BEN-Books.blogspot.com among other places across the web.

Tell us a bit about your new novel Deadly Games.

Deadly Games! is my third published novel. Deadly Games! is a stand alone novel that takes place in the same universe (which just happens to be the real world) as my first novel, Evil Ways. Some of the secondary characters from Evil Ways appear in Deadly Games!

Deadly Games! is an action-packed thriller.

Here’s the back cover copy for Deadly Games!--

They Played The Most Dangerous Game Of All!
And Death Was Only The Beginning...

Six years ago, Police Detective John Bartlett and journalist Benjamin West were instrumental in the capture of notorious master criminal Darrin Morehouse. Their story played out in the media, rocketing both Bartlett and West into local celebrity status.

Today, Morehouse, still a master game player and manipulator, commits suicide while in prison. His death initiates one final game of survival for the people Morehouse felt wronged him the most. At that top of the list are Bartlett and West, who must set aside their differences to save the lives of Morehouse's other victims and solve one last game before a dead man’s hired killers catch them and his other enemies.

Deadly Games! is a fast-paced action/thriller featuring action, suspense, murder, and the occasional gunfire from Author Bobby Nash, the writer of Evil Ways, Domino Lady, Lance Star: Sky Ranger, and more.

You also seem to keep popping back around to visit the Golden Age classic, the Domino Lady. How did that come about and what's new in that neighborhood?

The Domino Lady and I have an interesting relationship. I was unfamiliar with the character until I was invited to write a story for an anthology. I read the original stories and really fell in love with the character. Through a series of events that I won’t bore your readers with, the anthology went through some changes and eventually found a home at Moonstone books where it was released as Domino Lady: Sex As A Weapon.

I then had the Domino Lady’s alter ego, Ellen Patrick make a cameo appearance in my story for Lance Star: Sky Ranger Vol. 2. After that I didn’t know if I would ever write the character again, although I hoped to do so.

In 2011 I got that chance when I was invited to co-write a one shot comic book story with the fantastic Nancy Holder for Moonstone’s Return of the Monsters event. We had so much fun that it looks like we’re going to collaborate again on a future Domino Lady comic book story when she teams up with a certain British Detective.

Late in 2011 I was invited to write a Domino Lady novel for Moonstone’s upcoming line of pulp novels. I’m excited about this line and the books already solicited like Howard Hopkins’ Lone Ranger: Vendetta and CJ Henderson’s Kolchak: The Night Stalker And The Lost City and CJ’s The Spider novel as well. No in store date as yet. I start work on the novel in February.

I see you're involved in the new Pulp Obscura line. Are you at liberty to discuss those projects yet? Is so, spill already!

I am excited to be a part of the new Pulp Obscura line from Pro Se Press and Altus Press. As of this moment I am scheduled to work on four of the anthologies in 2012. However, only two have been announced so I can only share a little bit of information about those.

First up for me is The New Adventure of The Eagle. I just started working on this story today (1/14/12). I’m actually taking a short break from the story to do the interview. Originally, The Eagle appeared in five stories. He is a spy fighter often dubbed as “the master spy-fighter of them all.” I can’t spill too much about the story, but the title of my tale is “Lights! Camera! Sabotage!” Unless, of course, I change it before I’m finished, which I’ve been known to do.

The second is The Cases of Major Lacy. Major Lacy appeared in eleven stories, the last of which ended in a cliffhanger. Now, after all these decades, that cliffhanger will be resolved. I was tapped by Pulp Obscura editor, Tommy Hancock, to write the resolution to the cliffhanger and storyline. It’s a bit daunting, but I’m excited by the challenge. I’ll start work on that story in mid to late February.

What would be your dream project?

This is one of those answers that’s subject to change on a daily basis. I would love to write The Fantastic Four or Captain America. Plus, I think I have at least one story in me for Star Trek, or any number of media tie-ins of which I am a fan. I’ve made a couple of pitches for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis novels, but so far haven’t had any bites from the publisher that holds the license. Maybe one day.

If you have any former project to do over to make it better, which one would it be, and what would you do?

I don’t usually think along those lines. Once a project is done and gone I move on to the next one. That said, if I had only known then what I know now, I would have found a different publisher for Evil Ways. It was just a bad experience. That said, however, if Evil Ways had not come out when it did I might not be working on many of the projects I am today. Reading Evil Ways led Ron Fortier to think of me for Lance Star: Sky Ranger, which led to Domino Lady, etc, etc...

Any other upcoming projects you would like to plug?

But of course. You know me. I never pass up a chance to promote. Ha! Ha!

Coming in March is The Ruby Files Vol. 1 from Airship 27. Rick Ruby, p.i. is the first of several anthologies on the way co-created by the team of Bobby Nash and Sean Taylor. The second is called The Danger People from New Babel Books, but no release date on that one at this time. Plus, I am honored to have a story in IDW’s upcoming Zombies Vs. Robots prose project called “The Wall.”

Some other prose anthologies coming in 2012 featuring stories by me include Tales Of The Rook, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, Box 13, Nightbeat, The Avenger: Tales From Bleek Street, The Spider Vol. 2, Episodes From The Zero Hour Vol. 4: Weird Tales, Green Hornet: Still At Large, Lance Star: Sky Ranger Vol. 4, The Wraith, Secret Agent X Vol. 4, Aym Geronimo And The Post Modern Pioneers: Tall Tales, and more.

There’s also some movement on the novel front with the reissue of EVIL WAYS from New Babel Books. There’s also the aforementioned Domino Lady novel (title pending), Lance Star: Sky Ranger “Cold Snap!”, and Earthstrike Agenda. I’m also working on the novels Evil Intent, Blood Shot, and Deadly Games! 2 (title pending).

Upcoming comic books and graphic novels coming in 2012 include Lance Star: Sky Ranger “Space Ranger And Other Tales” with Jeff Austin and Rock Baker on art, the aforementioned Domino Lady comic with Nancy Holder, Bloody Olde Englund with Jason Flowers, Operation Silver Moon with Rick Johnson, and an as yet unannounced graphic novel I’m co-writing with Michael Gordon.

2012 is going to be a busy year.

I don’t have firm in store dates on some of these books yet, but I’ll share that news at www.bobbynash.com where you can learn more about my projects when I can share information.

Thanks for your time, Bobby!
